"Fuck you," she breathed with little conviction. I smiled into her face and tore her ear off with my teeth. This had all begun so gently, it was hard to keep track of the steps I had taken, the narrowing paths that had led to the loss of a soul. It has been a long time since I was called a man, or greeted with more than a scream. In the warrens of my regret you found me. You took the center of me and hollowed it out. You gave me the power to undo all that I had done, with a caveat I found more than acceptable: the good deeds abolished, I would live through each moment of weakness and have another choice, one for one, until the litany of sorrows had been lifted from my heart. But it never was, and never will be. I saw to that; you showed me the way. If it is still within me to love, I love you. I love you with a hatred that blocks the light from my eyes and rips the veins from my flesh. I know you will leave my side one day, your job completed. This moment I do not dread, at least no more than man dreads the dawn. I was a fallen grace. Now... now I am Fallen.

Personality: She bled easily into my waiting hand. Her breath was short and ragged, but somehow apathetic. Her liquid life pooled in my cupped palm - I drank to her health. It was warm and bitter against my palate. I tasted the iron and spat at her softly, half expecting to see the steel I savored rip through her features like a scythe through a harvest. She seemed to come alive then, her eyes opening wide, struggling out of my grasp with a strength born of terror. I wrapped my hand around her heel and stood unmoving. It was three hours until she had made her way through to the bone. When her marrow mixed with the dirt I let go, and watched her crawl away slowly, a river of red marking the way. I didn't follow the tributaries to their conclusion, but I knew their destination as well as I knew anything - a Sea of wasted life, and dreams deferred.

The End of Compassion

So cruel, my treasure. You did not have to end things this way. I would have done what I did without the irony of this harrowing reflection being thrust upon me. I see it now - you mock me. I can tell that I am deserving of little more than this - that this pale reminder is without end. Perhaps we can strike another bargain, you and I. I have a few strands of joy left buried deep within me - do they interest you?

Silence

"I hate you! I hate you I hate you! You're not my mother, and you never will be! You're a whore!" the boy screamed, fists clenched, his face burning with fury. "Darling, please-" her eyes beckoned him, brimming with tears, "Darling, you know I love you. I'm sorry, you shouldn't have seen that." "I hate you... you'll never be my real mother. Never..." He could tell his words had their intended effect - she recoiled as if struck, and wept freely, sobs racking her small frame. He hesitated for a moment, then ran to her, feeling her arms engulf him, feeling the warmth of her through the thin bed sheets. They cried together for some time, as though their regret could wash away the words, or at the very least make them untrue. / He saw it all. Their bodies entwined, moving lecherously on the bed. When she saw him she gasped, and covered herself hastily. He wanted to scream, but found that he did not need to. When the man had left, she knelt by him and looked into his eyes. She saw no hatred, no fear, no jealousy - he would not let her see. She opened her mouth to apologize, but found that she could not speak. Her breath caught in her throat, and she let the apology die on her lips. Unspoken, the remorse turned to apathy, and the next time the boy heard noises coming from his adopted mother's room, she told him to close the door.

"I love you, baby. Come away with me, and we'll see the Multiverse together, just the two of us. Forget your parents, they never understood you. We can make it together - I'll always take care of you. There's no one else in my life - I need you." "Oh... I'm not sure." "Please, trust me. We'll get married and you'll never have to worry again. You'll always be safe with me." / She woke the next morning slightly bruised. She tried to remember what had happened the night before, but the memories slipped away like sand. The panic she felt was understandable, but it faded in time, another mystery she'd come to accommodate, not the first, but one of many she would discover.

The man on the ledge shivered softly against the wind. It had been seven minutes and thirty three seconds since the young man had begun his effort to convince him to come down, into the window, and his patience was wearing thin. "I don't see why that makes life worth living." "Please, sir, think of your wife. She loves you very much, and would suffer if you left this world." "I suffer from this damn disease every second of every day. I am too weak to help anyone with anything. All I want is oblivion. I'm sorry, boy, but I have to go now. Good Luck to you. I can see that you have a kind heart. Good-bye." The man tried to jump, but found himself unable to move. He swore wildly and tugged at his ankles and wrists. "I'm sorry myself, sir, but I could not let you do it. I took the time we were talking to secure your hands and feet to the wall. The Security Team will be along shortly to help you down. Please reconsider your decision, and I'm sure you'll see that you have much to live for." The man's struggles grew feebler; he hung his head, and whispered lightly "Please... please." The young man was startled by a booming voice behind him. "Excellent work, kid. You'll get one hell of a bonus for this one!" / The man on the ledge shivered softly against the wind. Something about the kid they had sent to talk to him seemed wrong. "What do you mean you understand?" "I understand what it is like to regret, and to feel powerless. I will give you what you desire." "What I desire? I don't understand." "Pain, before the end. Pain, as penitence for your sins." The man shuddered and began to inch toward the window a shade too quickly. "I... I don't know what you mean. I don't want any more pain. Please, just let me in." He felt his heel slip against the concrete ledge, brushed by something subtle, unseen. He screamed all the way to the bottom.

The madman held the child before him as a shield, his greasy fingers sliding back and forth over the activation switch on the detonator. "I want a FTL Spaceship with enough fuel to get me into any alternate reality I choose! I want you to move all law enforcement personnel out of the building, and I'm taking this girl with me! Now!" Spittle flung from his distended mouth, and he coughed briefly before fingering the switch again. The spotter swore "Shit, you can't get a clear shot from this angle. He's going to set that thing off any second, and we're all going to be toast!" The uncertain young man frowned, sweat beading on his forehead. He faltered for another fraction of a second, and then made his decision. "I... I'm sorry." He pulled the trigger. The girl's throat exploded, and the madman's hand fell ten feet away. One of the hostages grabbed the detonator from the terrorist's severed hand as the rest of their tormentor screamed and screamed and screamed. / The confident young man smiled. "Don't worry, I've got it covered." A Wave of Nothingness passed over the bomber, and suddenly the detonator was imbedded in his hand. The pain was excruciating, but nothing compared to what he felt when the little girl's head replaced his stomach and spleen. "What have you done?!" The young man grinned, and refrained from comment.

Unification

The clone sputtered, blood running down its chin as the assassin's bullet wound its way up his spine. It collapsed to its knees, and tried in vain to speak. The killer grinned, until the thin whine of a teleportation device startled him out of his internal celebration. With a flourish the officer appeared behind the hired gun, weapon in hand. "How did you-" "I knew you'd be using bullets designed to home in on my genetic signature, so I had a dozen clones created, with trackers. I lobotomized each of them so they wouldn't be too hard for you to hit." "That's inhuman! They're you! I shot you!" "Yes, you shot me. Technically, your contract is complete. Since you're out of a job, I have a new one for you - as an informant. Tell me the name of your employer, and I might let you live." / The assassin's bullet wound its way up his spine, and shot out of the side of his neck. The blood sprayed up into the air, and the killer grinned, until the process slowed, and halted, leaving the merc's jaw hanging slack. The blood froze in the air, and then quickly shrank back into the officer's body. He was literally pulling himself back together. The long, weathered cackle of insanity split the air, and the hired gun dropped his weapons to surrender. He would regret the error.

Cage

The wounded officer managed to stumble into the trench, bleeding profusely from multiple wounds. The sounds of explosions and slaughter filled the air. He looked up at the sky and saw the clouds, the sun shining brightly, and wondered what the hell it thought it was up to, being so goddamned beautiful on such an ugly day. A slight noise distracted the soldier, and he saw the Lieutenant cowering in the corner. A too-large Kevlar vest was draped over his shoulders almost like a blanket. The officer licked his lips. "Sir, they're coming, and I could use some protection if I'm going to fight them off. I am already badly injured. Can I please borrow your vest?" The Lieutenant shook his head slowly and rocked back and forth on his heels. "Sir, I need that vest. Give it to me, now." The Lieutenant slowly turned and looked at his subordinate blankly. He began to yell, peals of fear and despair falling from his throat and striking the world. "Sir! They'll hear you! Sir, be quiet!" The Lieutenant cried out louder. The officer felt the blood rise to his cheeks. "Quiet! You'll get us both killed!" He hit the Lieutenant once about the face, and again. The screams began to die, but the officer could no longer hear them. "Quiet! Quiet! Quiet! Quiet! Quiet!" When he was finished, he put the bulletproof vest on slowly, careful to wipe the bloodstains off with the Lieutenant's white handkerchief. He stood to face his foes, no longer knowing whether he himself was one of them. / Keepmeinsidekeepmelockedawayneverletthemseeme vestsaremadetokeepthebadmenoutbut cagescagescagesaremadetokeepbadboysin staywithme
