"It is quite arrogant to think that the only way for humanity to be made extinct is through our own scientific or technological advances. Nature is quite capable of bdoing the job all by herself, should she choose to." Dr. Sai Iguoi, Khazan State University

Seminole Swamp Provincial Forest Infection Day 6.

Park Ranger Claxton Prescott was in an irritable mood, and with seemingly good reason. Due to an unfortunate "incident" with the daughter of the head of the Province of Resurgens' park department, he had been re-assigned from his former post of running the scenic lighthouse of Port Wentworth, and of course running through a few...ok a lot of the cute female tourists. His new assignment was to the middle of this swamp of dead looking trees. Even worse than the swamp was the backwater town of Waycross, not a single cute female, nor a single bartender that could make a dry martini correctly. What savages. And this persistent inland heat was making him itch in places he didn't even know he had.

Or maybe it wasn't the heat, thought Claxton for what had to be the millionth time. He looked at the forecast...unseasonably cool. He fought back a wave of panic that came from being so far out of his urban comfort zone. Maybe it was all those dead animals he had needed to clear out of the park's more visible areas. Was it normal for deer to die in the way they had been lately? Crying in pain, and bleeding from the eyes, mouth and snout? He had done his job and forwarded the remains up to the Provincial department's labs, but they were backlogged for six months at least.

Claxton came to, shaking off the fear, as a middle-aged couple came to his desk and asked about buying souvenirs of the swamp, or postcards with a picture of its biggest attractions, the few Arcturan Mega-Gators that prowled the deepest reaches of the morass. He deftly directed then to Waycross's tourist traps, itching merrily all the while while getting them to sign the guestbook. It was full of names today.

And on and on and on.

Way Path County Coroners Office Infection Day 9.

"So what's so important that they sent someone down from Khazan proper?" asked the technician, fresh off another shift of sawing up bodies and see what made them tick...or not tick in this case.

The clerk replied. "It's that Prescott thing. You ran the autopsy with Doc, right? I heard that he was in bad shape."

"You don't know the half of it. You never heard this from me, but kid's brain was damn near liquefied, it was compressed and decayed so bad. All his nerves were inflamed, god know how much pain he was in. It actually looked like rabies on steroids. I doubt it's infectious, or airborne at least, but I'm thinking that it's a good time for a vacation. I'm getting out of here, stat, before worse gets here".

Personality: Way Path County Memorial Hospital - Infection Day 13.

Worse had officially arrived in Way Path County. One look from the Khazanian disease inspector at the corpse of Claxton Prescott was enough to get the troops called in, and to throw out any plans of leaving Waycross, by the citizenry. But by that point, it was all over but the itching. And the exploding brains. Way Path county, with it's links to everywhere was officially a "black" zone, but the disease has already spread across Resurgens. Cases were even being reported as far away as Vulcan, where they had refired up one of the long closed Schloshberg Steel furnaces to use as a giant incinerator for the dead bodies.

In Waycross, the worst was gone, along with most of the populace. The ones who hadn't run early were cordoned off into the city by a growing number of jack-booted troops. Osecola Hospital was overran by day 10. The doctors, had no idea of the virulence of what they were fighting, and were infected before they knew to defend themselves. With them erased, the disease was free to spread unstopped.

For the few people in Waycross that has taken nanite regenerating treatments, it was even worse. The virus was able to somehow spread through the defense of the miniature machines, and somehow get to the final stage, but the nanites kept repairing the damage over and over again, without being able to kill the virus. These people, mainly doctors and members of the Khazanian Disease Watch were now incubators for the disease. Not able to be killed, or to expel the disease, but always spreading it, they were held under the tightest of lock and key, researching endlessly.

Disease Watch Research Team 0 (Way Path Lockdown Team) Initial Report Day 27.

We know the basics about the disease now. It's a mutated form of the SR-44 strain of rabies that has a hardier shell, allowing it to survive outside of a host body for multiple hours. The virus once entering the body moves to the brain via the nervous system, once there multiplying massively. These new cells, travel down the nervous system to the lungs via the Vagus nerve, and to the more sensitive areas of the body, replicating and tearing apart nerve cells in the process. This is the cause of the "constant itching" reaction seen in most victims in the last stage of the virus. The cells in the brain continue to replicate, causing the brain cells to dissolve, and causing a building up of fluid inside the cranial cavity. By the time that these symptoms are noticeable though, the victim is normally within 6 hours of death. The mortality rate for people infected is 95.6%.

Airbone Attacker

  • Power: Flight
  • Level:Standard
The disease mainly spreads through aerial exposure. Upon a virus cell entering the lungs of a host, it settles in the alveoli, where it expands rapidly inside these cells. For victims infected in this manner there will be enough virus cells on the lungs to become contagious to others after forty to forty-four hours. For victims infected through other means they won't become contagious until the onset of other symptoms, normally just prior to death.

Unknowing Offender

  • Power: Blending
  • Level:Ultimate
  • Kit Power Link: Overlord
The worst part about the disease though, is the long leadup between the time when someone is infected and the onset of symptoms. Prople have been known to have traveled hundreds of miles, infecting everyone along the way. Most people have four whole days when they're a carrier of the virus, but can't be known as such wothout a rigorous full-body scan.

The influx of scanning machines may be what saved the cities of Resurgens and Vulcan from being completely emptied in the same was Waycross was. Unfortunately, there aren't nearly enough machines to screen everyone. For now we'll have to continue a nationwide quarantine, and an end to free travel privileges.

Disease Watch Research Team 0 (Way Path Lockdown Team) Initial Report Day 31.

The work towards a cure continues, but we've hit a new roadblock. The virus, now quantifies as SR-44-H, seems to be producing a special chemical known to be an inhibitor to the functioning of anti-bodies. When an anti-body tries to kill a SR-44 cell, the cell releases an enzyme that causes other cells to attack the anti-bodies instead of the virus. I'm presonally coming to the conclusion that this thing was either built by God, or by a set of very sick terrorists.

Unceasing Spread.

  • Power: Healing
  • Level:Supreme
  • Kit Power Link: Overlord
In my professional estimation, this virus can only truly be stopped by the extermnation of anything living that has been infected. Until there is a vaccine in place, keeping any samples around, even for research is akin to playing with a nuclear warhead. One single carrier could spread the disease into the Central Plains, or even Khazan where it would be almost impossible to stop, and would certainly bring about another round of death.

Carrier Vector.

Day 91: The virus was generally contained to Resurgens and Yellow Hammer provinces, although the means uses in some of the other provinces to halt the spread could be seen as brutal at best. The only good thing so far about SR-44-H is that it kills it's victims rapidly, and areas are generally cleared 96 hours after the extinction of most animal life.

Our hope is that the virus doesn't find a animal that can contan and spread the virus without dying, the same way that mosquitoes spread West Nile Virii. In the meantime we're going to exterminate everything left in the two provinces and start over. It's all we can do.
