Sometimes, you just need to take a step back for a second, you know? I've been here on Khazan for quite a while now... fought my way once through the ranks of the League, met the other COMING members and even a few OTHERS, finally landed a nice job in the lower offices as an AoC techie, or something along those lines. Life wasn't too bad, actually not so stressful for once. I've had a bit more time to work on writings (which I'm glad to see how they've played out so far, by the way), gotten to meet a couple of well-known and well-respected names (and well-reviled ones too), and the job actually pays enough that I occasionally have a little money left over after bills and being leeched on by the other slackers that I can enjoy a little time to myself getting some decent food around Uptown Khazan... huh? Girl? Nah, I don't have THAT much money, and besides, I rather enjoy the quietness... Loner? *sigh* You've talked to HIM, haven't you... I.. try not to think about things like being a loner too much. I mean, hey, it's not like I avoid the OTH-- err, other COMING members completely. Sure, they're annoying at times, but truth be told I've been around worse; once you get to know them they're not that bad a bunch to hang around with. Which I do... what were we talking about? Oh, yes, things were going well... then -they- had to show up. Stupid Nega-COMING... especially HIM. I don't know what I'm going to do about HIM, but it's probably going to have to be done soon, what with him entering the AoC and all. If worse comes to worse, I'll probably end up fighting him in some dramatic conclusion to this whole mess, but somehow I get the feeling that even if that happens it won't be over. Que cera cera, I suppose. I just hope it doesn't get out of hand. It's been harder and harder lately to take care of problems that come up without being twinkish with the powers I've been given. To not be able to resolve everything cleanly and nicely... it's rather depressing, really...

Personality: "What can I say about Lee other than the fact that he seems to be the only COMING guy that doesn't want my head impaled on a spire? He's a decent guy. Easy to get along with once you break through that hermit-like persona of his. I do kinda worry about the guy though. I can't blame a guy for being a little uneasy in the social department, I'm that way as well, but Lee seems to be very uneasy after that whole NEGA-COMING ordeal. Granted, I was rather creeped when I saw my counterpart, but Lee seems to be taking it the worst out of all of us. He really needs something to take his mind off things. Maybe I could loan him one of these insane chicks that are chasing me around..." -- Landon, COMING-type Person

Hmm, what can I write for you as an example... something with a bit of Wild West flair? A Medieval Fantasy? Space Sci-Fi? Khazan holds play to all. To begin, we'll need some scenery... *As Lee types at his computer, the surroundings change. At first, a cafe nouveau forms, a relaxed atmosphere... "No, something a little more exciting..." The room changes again, to that of a saloon, complete with billiards table, and player piano...* There, much better. Yes, I use a computer now. The books and pencil are the tried-and-true way of putting down ideas, but it's so much easier to keep track of things 'electronically', so to speak. So, here we are in the Last Ditch Saloon, ready for an action-packed scene. Now, to put some life into this story...

  • Auto-Hit This mental attack hits the target automatically, but may or may not effect them.
We'll need a barkeeper, a decent piano player, some roughhouses at the bar... *tap, tap, tap. As Lee types, several folks with mostly blank stares wander into the room, dressed to the occasion* Some gentlemen playing cards, their ladies at their sides... what? Where'd the people come from? Oh, here and there; I borrowed a few off the street that weren't doing anything important, and on occasion I'll slip a few NPCs away from Josh's stack. He'll never notice that they're gone until I'm finished. I suppose I should be Straight-Shot Jack, or some similar heroic figure; the name can always be edited later once the rough draft is finished. Oh, for you? Here, your gun sir, you'll be playing the villain... that's right, sit right there, your cards, chips, and vengeful attitude are already in place for you... and... *click* we're off! *The scene springs to life, as everyone suddenly shifts into their assigned roles as if they had always lived them...*

Plot

Now, of course, we'll need a plot. For the sake of example, I'm sticking with something simple today, a basic good/evil conflict. Generally, my stories have many more central characters, with much more complexity and development; but anyways... I've already planned out the story, here's the rundown: after having won your recently stolen-earnings from you in a high-stakes card game, you accuse me of cheating, challenge me to a duel at high noon tomorrow. Now, you won't have to worry about doing anything during the scenes in which I discover that the guard you shot down while robbing that bank last week was actually my long-lost brother, just make sure to show up for the final showdown in which I valiantly defeat you in the duel, and, the money returned to its rightful owners, go riding off into the sunset. All right, let's... what? What do you mean you want to be the one to win? That just won't work, see? Look, if the plot ends this way *directs your sight towards the computer screen* it won't have a happy ending, and these kind of stories need to have one of those. You understand, right? Good, let's wrap this up, and don't worry, you'll be fine in a day or two.

Editing

  • Power: Disintegration
  • Level:Standard
  • Area Effect This attack causes damage in a large area.
  • Armor Piercing This attack ignores normal defenses which are not Reinforced.
And so ends our little discussion on fictional writing, I suppose. It's worked rather well so far; I've managed to put together a small archive of past writings that I enjoyed writing, stored away on here *taps the laptop*. Once I'm done with the "dry run", so to speak, I look over the work, remove any parts I dislike or consider detrimental to the overall quality of the story, then the final copy is tucked away in history... remove? Well, generally I only cut out minor scenes that don't come out right, but I have been known to, on occasion, remove, replace, or edit whole characters as well... typically, those whose personalities really didn't get the chance to develop well enough into a solid character, or a central character who just doesn't seem to stand out from the crowd correctly, or, on occasion, I just didn't like how they turned out when I was done with them. Rather fickle decisions sometimes, yes, but generally they always follow the guidelines of separating the wheat from the chaff and keeping the overall quality of the finished work high. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a bit of writing to do...

One of the advantages of having moved my collection of works and writings to electronic media is the ability to quickly call up said archives on command. At a moment's notice, tales of the past can be brought forth to be studied alongside present projects, for references, continuity, or the occasional error correction. As well, if the unexpected emergency arises-- characters have been known to be unruly at times-- I always keep a backup copy or two on hand. Never hurts to be prepared...
