The Rookie

I think its Friday night, or Saturday morning. Does it really matter? It’s the weekend, that’s all that matters. My head feels like water with fish swimming through it as a group of guys place another three shots in front of me. I down them in seconds and they all scream and cheer as I smile and sit back in my usual booth. One of them points out at the flat screen on the ceiling. Instead of the usual porno or random music video screen it’s the news. They show me beating up some punks as a girl cries and huddles in the alleyway corner. I see myself on the television dust off the thugs then reach my hand out and say the line that’s been quoted by newscasters all around the world.

“Don’t be scared” I pantomime with my lips.”

“’DON’T BE SCARED AW MAN DAWG!” My fans are all going as they call over one of the waitresses for more drinks. I go out all the time and I never pay for a god damn thing. Not like I can’t afford it, they pay me well for my heroics so long as I let them roll the cameras. But I let these guys waste their money anyway. I let them buy me drinks for a moment to bask in my glory. A beer for a Facebook photo with me in it, it seems fair.

The night is passing by as the revelers are now nearly passed out trying to keep up with me drink for drink. Sometimes I wish I didn’t have these powers because more often than not they kill my buzz but tonight I think it’s finally going to linger. They say at a certain level of inebriation alcoholics have what is called a moment of clarity and I’m pretty damn sure I’m having one now. The fuzzy haze around my vision is gone as I look over at a hot little thing stepping up to the pole and gyrating as the sick, perverted and desperate loosen the grip on their dollar bills. I keep watching her, my eyes fixated on her hips as I exhale a long stream of smoke and I come to the realization that life is good. No, actually, life is fucking amazing. I wish I could take this moment and lock it up on a USB key and replay it later whenever I feel sorry about myself. Fuck your angst boy, life is great.

Putting out my cigarette I walk past the stage and flash the girl a hundred dollar bill before heading off to my own private room in the back.

She’s talking, she won’t shut up and she’s one of the chatty ones.

“… so you were in the news again. Can’t believe what those guys were going to do to her. Lucky you showed up…”

She had already slipped her bra off as her breast heaved in front of my face as I sat there stoic. I observed her full form, admiring her smooth skin and her nearly symmetrical features. She grabbed my hand and forced me to run it over that round ass of hers.

“Come on you’re The Zone, you can touch. Anything for a super hero you know that.”

“Please go over into the corner and dance for me.” I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small bag of weed as the girl was taken aback a little but proceeded to saunter away from me as she gyrated in the corner. She kept looking back and smiling at me as I slowly rolled my joint and proceeded to light it up.

“Mind if I take a hit of that?” she asked. I simply nodded.

She came and sat down beside me slowly taking the joint from my lips and took a long toke before coughing. I simply looked at her as she tried to exude that false sense of self confidence all girls like her try to play off. I loved it. I loved her trying to talk about going to university and dancing to pay it off. Fuck that, she’s an attention whore, she loves the money. She gets off on this. I can tell as she runs her hands under my shirt.

“When’s your shift done here?”

“I gotta go up on stage one more time but after that I’m free.”

“I’m heading to a party, you want to come?”

What You Need

     Emotion Control: standard (rank 1)

She shook as we stood alone in the elevator. The numbers ascended at a quick pace as she wore a designer knock off dress she probably stole from the club and a feathered mask I made her put on. I was wearing my usual black domino mask as she kept looking around. It was as if she was waiting for something to happen to her as the doors opened to the elevator. I let her out first as we looked down the stark white hall way leading towards a set of intricate French doors.

She walked slowly, her heels clicking on the hardwood floor as I placed my hand in the middle of her upper back. I rubbed her smooth skin softly as I leaned over and whispered to her.

“It’s all going to be fine. I’m here for you, and you trust me.”

She stopped shivering almost right away as the doors opened slowly.

High for This

     Flight: superior (rank 2)

I suddenly wake up on a pile of coats and two girls on the floor naked sleeping beside each other. I remember doing a line back in the living room as I heard a couple going at it behind the couch. I quickly get up and throw my shirt and pants on as I pass by people in various states of intoxication and dress. Glasses were strewn all along the marble floors, the party was over and I barely remember it. My head throbs as I open random doors, some eliciting squeals and screams as I look for the girl from the club.

I finally open one of the bathroom doors, stumbling in as I make a face at a poor guy praying to the porcelain gods. As I turn to leave I hear some laughter and look over at the standing stall shower and there she is, smiling and covered in balloons as she kicked them up into the air only to have them drop back down again. As I open the shower door the balloons spill out and she comes along with them as she mumbles to me.

“That was amazing Zone, we gotta do this again! Woooo!”

Grabbing her I pick her up and carry her over my shoulder. I start making my way for the balcony.

“Where are we going, are we taking a cab?”

“I had a better idea, hold tight.”

She screamed and hollered in excitement as I pushed off and flew into the night sky.

The Party and the Aftter Party

     Regeneration: superior (rank 2)

“Don’t leave, please.”

She had torn off my shirt as she ran her hands up and down my body. I turned around to face her as her eyes twitched in the darkness scanning over me.

“Didn’t you get into a fight today? Didn’t some crazy guy stab you in the stomach?”

I smiled at her as I said “I heal fast.”

Laying her back on her bed I looked into her eyes as I asked “are you sure you want me to stay?”

“Yes… why… why wouldn’t I?”

“Because, I can last a very long time.”

House of Balloons

     Induced Sleep: standard (rank 1)

It was almost nine in the morning as I sat at the edge of her bed. The sun was shining through her old drapes as she tossed and turned beside me. I looked over at her as I placed my hand on her forehead. I closed my eyes as the darkness slowly faded and revealed to me her dream. She was lying amongst balloons, kicking them up. The balloons filled the room as I stood in front of her naked, laughing and watching her play. I held my hand there for a moment longer before I opened my eyes. She had stopped stirring, hugging a pillow, sound asleep.

Quickly putting on my clothes I step out of her widow and fly off, the sun beaming into my eyes as I mutter to myself.

“Damn, you didn’t even bother learning her name this time.”
