Video Games that COULD have a really good live adaptation

perhaps assassins creed..?

If done properly it could actually be pretty good.

The thing with most movie adaptations though, is that either the execution is terrible or something is lost in translation (and on the rare occasions that it is not one of these it seems to be both).

I think it would work well, as long as they keep Keanu away from it.

Mass Effect, Fallout, and their ilk (the WRPG genre) cannot be made into movies because there is too much left to the player in the actual game to generate a universal canon.

That being said, movies based on games are a bad idea. Video games are better than movies anyway, so why spend 2 hours watching a fast-forwarded plot when you could be looking for treasure, or leveling up, or something.

Come on man... that doesn't count.

Still nothing stopping them from doing it. Comicbook based films, generally, are not considered canon in relation to their franchises main universes, but, the still produce them.

Yeah but the thing is that for most people, what is fun about a video game is that you can interact with it and in more in depth RPGs actually alter the story. Not only that, but consider how unhappy some fans would be if the movie's cannon completely contradicted what happened in their game (to get a scope of this, think of how angry fans of a certain book are when the movie adaptations only follow the book loosely). It would completely disrupt their idea of what the game is about and how it should play out.

A good example of this is that abomination Dragon Ball Evolution. It followed the story very loosely and look what happened to it.

I never said it would be fail-proof, just do-able.

Don't remind me of that thing. I've been trying to erase it from my memory since that movie came out.

True. However, I thought it should be further clarified why some games are even less fit than others for a movie adaptation.

As hard as it would be, and as crazy as it sounds, I would like to see a Smash Bros. movie.

Maybe not all of the characters at first, maybe something like Snake meeting up with Metaknight, or Fox and Diddy in the woods, or Sonic and Mario fighting it out. (That would be cool!)

But alas, this fanboy dream of mine will never come to be.

They could do it up like the Original Mortal Combat Movie... before they crapped it up with that squeal.
