Thoughts on improving the Fantasy Teams competition

These are very sold concerns.  Let's talk about it.

I get where you are coming from that it seems it moves too fast.  I think it does too!

I mean, imagine what it's like to be me!  Now I have to pull, like, 70 new challenges out of my ass and also have all the Challenge images ready in a week.  Wow, right?  Seriously, fuck that.  I'm ready to give up too!  But, you know, I love you guys and I'm a giver.

But enough about me, let's talk about how the Fantasy Teams system works.

In this Season 5, there were 8 rounds (which is pretty standard) where each round had 22 matches.  That means we looked at 176 matches this season!  Wow!

In that regular season, there were no matches where a contender had the same opponent twice.

Statistically, if you go much beyond eight rounds you probably are going to have to allow repeat matches.  Because people can Bench, you really only have a pool of five available per team and you don't know which ones are available to play. I really don't want to have repeat battles.

The season could be longer by letting the matches run for 5 days instead of 3... but that sounds slow and boring to me, personally.  But who knows.. maybe people want that.  Do they?  That makes a season longer without adding fun value, IMO.

On the topic of another round:

Okay, it's possible a ninth round could have been had, and possibly no repeat fight would have occurred.  But there has to be a cut-off.  It cannot go on forever.  It depends on how many teams signed up for the season... that determines how long we can go without a repeat fight.

We had two 120 points teams at the end of round eight, which is kind of a sweet spot for completion.  That worked out perfectly.  It can't go on forever.  And the teams at 110 were great teams, but not the top teams.

So it ended at two teams at 120 points and it was a really competitive season.  I guess I could have found a way to drag it on thru December.  But, in my estimation, it was a really solid Season 5.

I appreciate the response, and I think the season was solid as a whole as well. Like I said, I'm thankful for all the work you do and I don't want to just be that guy who complains about something he's given for free. I just wanted to say what was on my mind about these tournaments because I enjoy them, but honestly I'm getting a little bit burnt out at the turnover rate of the seasons. I agree that the matches shouldn't individually be longer, as that would just drag the whole season to halt every three days as we waited for the matches to expire.

As for the probability of rerun matches, I can understand why that would be a concern, but I have three major thoughts on that front:

1. As many people have pointed out, this season was incredibly well balanced, to the point where the match-ups largely came down to the fight setting determining the match. With that in mind, a repeat match very well could go the other way, especially in categories such as the Gods and the entertainers. In fact, from personal experience, I feel like I really got screwed over by the categories with my God, and on repeat matches, I could have definitely flipped all of those around

2. I can't speak for anyone else, but I had two characters that I thought would have absolutely dominated that just never got a chance to shine at all. The Reapers and Brock Lesnar both would have done very well, but the former only got put in one match, and the latter got put in none, despite being off the bench the entire season. I think prioritizing winning characters might have had something to do with it, I'm honestly not sure, but I really only had 4 characters out of my 7 who made regular appearances, even though I shifted around who was on my bench and whatnot, and it would have been nice to see more of them show up.

3. I think the idea of a playoffs would still address this problem as well. Having entire teams going up against each other would mean that, even if there is a repeat match, it's less of an issue because those teams are going up in 6 other matches as well. This has happened before in the finals (Wonder Woman fought Scarlet Witch twice last season) and so I think it could work here. I just like the idea of continuing each season a bit longer and rewarding those that do well by letting them enter the team fights, which I think are a lot of fun. This also indirectly addresses the above point, as team fights force everyone, including those on the bench, to get in on the action. Consequently, this means that teams could no longer be carried to the finals on the backs of just one or two strong combatants, and would encourage a stronger overall team comp rather than just strong outliers.

Every one of these are great observations on the state of the game.

I think those concerns can be addressed and the Fantasy Teams competition made better.  I'm with you there.

Let's use this thread to get some more feedback about it.  Let's see if we can make it better.

Only thing I have to add to this is:

I think the length is fine. Between 7 or 9 rounds should be the cut off until the end.

I was not a fan of the preferred slot picks last season. I said to somebody because I liked not knowing which of my team was going to get a match in a particular round. It is true that I could plan around knowing which would be preferred, but I think I like not knowing.

And I think a playoff / final four would be a fun idea. Unless there's too many people with the same amount of points, take the top four teams after 7 or 8 rounds and have them go at each other. And then the winners of that go against each other and then you have a winner.

This is just an idea.

But maybe in the last round/s, we still have matches between the Losing Teams, while the Winner Teams are fighting each other, and the season just ends with one of those Winner Teams.

That why a few more characters will have like one more match before the season ends.

After noodling on it a bit, here's my thoughts on addressing some of this.

Season Length:

It sounds like one season a month is too fast for folks.  So, probably seasons should run two months.

I don't really have a dog in the fight about how long a "Season" should be because I don't run a team (unless I'm required to do so for the purposes of making it an even number).  My assumption was that people would enjoy something new each month and I'm just here to provide entertainment.

So, two months sounds like what people want.

Number of Rounds:

I guess 10 to 12 regular rounds would need to become the new standard.  Followed by "play-offs".

And I don't know what play-offs look like, honestly, but I have heard the suggestion "Final Four" so that seems reasonable.  I'm not clear how that set-up works, yet.

Umpire's Match-up Algorithm

I'll make Umpire less aggressive about trying to promote winners into new matches.

That's essentially what I hear you want.  Although, to be fair, I've heard it from exactly 1 person.  Feel free to chime in if you have a different idea about it.

Thanks!

I don't mean to speak for everyone here, but that sounds like a really solid plan to enhance the seasons to me! Thank you, Fox

+1 to Pey's post. These drafts are already really fun, and I think those improvements can make it even better.

OK, cool.  So it shall be.

Maybe this new Winter themed one will last though into January, then.

I think winners should be paired but if it's a little less so that's fine.

So if you stretch out the season, how long does it take for a new round to start after one has ended?

It's the same.  There will just be more that 8 rounds, which is where I had been ending it each month.  So you might get 12 rounds instead.

@Peypeypeypey @Bergy_Berg I hope you'll be putting up teams.  You know, considering you are the catalyst for these updates.

I'm working on mine. The slots for this season are a real head scratcher for me, and looking at the other teams I think a lot of the strongest picks are already taken. But I will get mine in.

Oh, I think there's plenty of ripe character fruit still out there.  Not even the bottom of the barrel yet.

I sure am glad we are moving to Seasons that are, like, twice as long.  I'm about maxed out on my desire to come-up with challenge images, for now.

I might even phone Season 7 in and make it a "Best Of Slots" from the first 6 seasons.

That said, every Slot in season seven has custom terrains.  That's a first.

That deity mishap that happened earlier in the Dagda and someone else match, do you think there could be a wildcard slot like that as well? Where instead of the usual challenges, they have random challenges.

Many of the challenges wouldn't make sense for a lot of characters.  Probably the closest thing to that would be the Jack of all Trades slot this season, which is pretty random.

That technique won't be used going forward.  That was a way to quickly get Umpire a pool of winners in slots that could be promoted against other winners.

Umpire is more concerned now about looking for characters that haven't seen much action.  Like picking them up when they come off the bench.
