Has KISS jumped the shark?

Recommended Posts

They probably jumped the shark sometime around the year they started making comics and toys.

Guys, you're missing the point. Kiss never sold 'in' in the first place. The very concept of Kiss was to become a brand. The toys, comics, lottery tickets and all the rest of it? That was the idea since the beginning. You can't say they sold out their principles for money and fame because they were all about the money and fame to begin with. Gene Simmons would tell you that himself.

I found a Hello Kiss Kitty at Barnes and Noble.

Let that sink in.

KISS are horrible. Their music is unlistenable to me, similar to Alice Cooper. They look cool and when I was a child I thought that they might be awesome, based on their costumes, before I'd ever heard them.

Those in defense of their music, listen to their hits. "IIIIIIIII wana rock and roll...alll daaaaay and party every niiiightttt!" So. F'ing stupid. Comparable to the solo Ozzy stuff. Those were the times everyone one tries to forget happened.

Way I see it is if you're judging music by the lyrics, you're doing it wrong.

Actually, that is probably the only possible way to judge Bob Dylan, because purely as music Dylan sounds like over-caffeinated yowling beatnik cats mating... poorly.

For every rule, an exception!

An entire genre disagrees with you.

In fairness, Even KISS's biggest fans admit they're the cheesy action movies of the music genre. They're a lot of fun, but they're meaningless trash (not that there's anything wrong with that). I really don't think KISS are that similar to Cooper or Ozzy though. The music has a completely different feel.

Also, lyrics come into it, but judge the whole peace - lyrics and music. Even rap songs need a good beat.

And I love Dylan's broken voice, actually. For me, it adds emotional resonance to his music.

^This guy. I don't judge based on lyrics, but they do play into it. Like, my favorite album, Midnight Organ Fight is my favorite because of its lyrical content, but I didn't start listening to it and start liking it because of its lyrics. Lyrics are icing on the cake, it's the actual music that draws me and determines if its good or not. My favorite band is The New Pornographers and I'll be damned if I know what a single song of theirs is about (except for something like "My Slow Descent Into Alcoholism").

Sure.  And don't get me wrong, I love Dylan.  Have his albums and seen him a couple times.  But... would Dylan's broken voice still be adding emotional resonance if his catalog of music was the lyrics from Brittany Spears albums?  I think it is the masterful Lyrics themselves which are the package for Dylan.

See, I don't know about that. His voice makes it seem like he truly believes in his lyrics, he feels what he's singing. So if he's singing about something dumb, if he convinces me that it's real with his voice, then I'm in.

It's like with most other things, different people judge music based on different things.

For me, it depends on the song.  Some songs, I like because of their lyrics. The sound of the voice, and the music, are ok, but the lyrics is what makes the song actually worth listening to over and over again.  With others, it's the sound of the voice, while the music and lyrics are just icing.  With others again, it's the music(with some, it's purely the music).

Likewise, it's different for different genres.  You can't really judge Rap song or Death Metal song, on the same things that you would judge a Johnny Cash song, to give an example.  Apples and oranges.

I judge based on lyrics and emotion I tend to like the people who are so passionate about there music they hurt themselves on stage my favorite band of all time was nirvana because you could tell they put everything into their music and it really meant something to them.
