Rumble 13712 Zeus vs. Darkseid

Recommended Posts

Apokalips has invaded Olympus and the old gods are fighting back. while the other gods struggle against each other, the rulers of the two realms square off. It's mighty Zeus against the immense power of Darksied.

Zeus's powers.

Strength - Zeus is the strongest of the Olympians, with the possible exception of Heracles. The two wrestled at the celebration when Heracles became an Olympian and neither could win. In one of his labors (recovering the Golden Apples of the Hesperedes), Heracles took over for atlas supporting the weight of the earth (or the sky) on his shoulders. Heracles, and by extension Zeus) are this in the same strength category as Superman.

Immortality - While Olympians can be overpowered, they apparently cannot be killed by any level of physical damage. Promethius had his liver torn out and eaten by an eagle every day. The liver grew back and the eagle started in again. In superhero terms. This is not a special power of Promethius, it's just a good illustration of the healing factor all immortals have in Greek myth. They also have a different relationship to life and death. In the legend of Admetus and Alcestus, Heracles defeated Death in a wrestling match and forced him to depart without his intended victim.

Speed - While there aren't any great feats of speed I can find for Zeus in myth, he is universally regarded as the most powerful of the group. That means that Hermes would not have an advantage over him because of his speed. While I'm sure Superman is faster than Zeus, it won't be enough of a difference to allow him to win by blitzing him. If Hermes can't do it, nobody can. Also, Zeus' power to appear on earth is probably a form of teleportation.

Shape-changing - Zeus is an expert at this and can take on what seems to be an unlimited number of forms. The forms he used in myth include: a bull, an eagle, a whirlwind, the goddess Artemis, a swan, a serpent, and a shower of golden rain. Zeus is also able to change mortals into animals, trees, etc.

Weather Control - As king of the heavens, Zeus can summon weather to aid him. His specialty is the thunderstorm.

Aegis - The shield (in some versions the breastplate) of Zeus is said to be indestructible and invulnerable, capable to turning aside any attack. The aegis is also emblazoned with the face of Medusa and anyone who looks on it will be transformed to stone.

Thunderbolts - Zeus' favorite weapon, made by the cyclopses on the forge of Hephaestus. It's hard to quantify their power but, in the DC Universe, it's Zeus' thunderbolts that transform Billy Batson into Captain Marvel, so that gives an idea of how these would affect Superman.

Adamantine sickle - Zeus doesn't use this as often, but the sickle, made of a material that is harder and sharper than any other was what he used when the fight moved into close range. The mythical material adamant was the inspiration for Marvel's adamantium, and for all practical purposes, it's the same. It was first used by the titan, Kronos to do away with his father Oranos (that's why pictures of Father time aka Chronos/Kronos often carry a sickle of scythe.) When Zeus overthrew Kronos, he took the sickle and used it as his personal weapon. The sickle was the weapon Zeus used against the monster Typhon when his thunderbolts couldn't get the job done. It was also the weapon he lent to Perseus to cut off Medusa's head. (The stories usually refer to Perseus weapon as a sword, but the Greek machiara was a sword which was developed from the sickle, so perhaps both versions are
correct.

Aetis dios - A huge eagle who attends Zeus in battle. His role is to fetch Zeus anything he needs. If he drops his sickle/sword, or shield, or runs out of thunderbolts the eagle brings him more with godlike speed.

Darkseid likes to call himself a god, but zeus if the real deal. The king of olympus can stand up to anything darkseid throws at him. And as the most powerful of the gods, zeus can perform incredible feats beyond what the other gods have managed, like Athena crushing enemies with islands.

This will be one for the ages but in the end it will be Darkside chained to a rock having his liver torn out by an eagle.

It's not the New 52 Darksied. I'm afraid I'm not aware of the difference between pre and post-Crisis Darksied.

There aren't actually any, it has been stated that Darkseid was one of the few characters who survived the Crisis, and as such has been unchanged by it.

I'll try and see if I can find where it was stated.

That's true....that's what they say....however, there are obvious differences, such as Darkseid during the pre-crisis era was an absolute monster. He was a bonafide universal level threat. Then during the post-crisis era, he suddenly developed a reputation as being "Jobberseid." So, there's an obvious difference, whether DC wants to acknowledge it or not.

My vote goes to Darkseid if this is the pre-crisis version. My vote goes to Zeus if this is the post-crisis Jobberseid.

Adamantine is the metal that Hephaestus uses to forge the weapons and armor of the gods.

There are several stories about the Aegis. In one it was forged by Hepheastus (so it was probably made of adamantine) which would explain its mirror like surface described in the story of Perseus. Another story is that it was made from the hide of the primordial goat Amalthea who had suckled the infant Zeus (Amalthea was also called Adamanthea, which makes me think there was a connection between her and adamantine. A third story says it was made from the skin of a fire-breathing serpent that Athena slew.

For our purposes I'm going to saw that there are two Aegis. One is the serpent skin which Athena wears as armor and the other is Zeus' shield. The shield is made of adamantine and covered with goatskin (Greek and Roman shields were often covered with leather. When Perseus used it, he didn't get the goatskin, just the shiny shield. When Zeus uses the shield he covers it with the goatskin which makes it even more impenetrable than it would be otherwise.

Could Zeus survive the omega blast or omega effect? That's the bigger question. It wouldn't be physical damage either so chances are it may or may not kill him. Another question could Zeus resist or fight Darkseid's power telepathy? Alot of abilities Darkseid has here that could give him the win depending on Zeus's defenses against certain things like telepathy or omega blast.

Darksied is fallen leaving Grayvven and Kalibak the only warriors of Apokalips standing. Facing them are Poseidon, Artemis, Ares, Aphrodite, Eros, Athena, Hera, Hermes, Dionysius, Poseidon and Zeus.

Do the Apokalips boys continue to fight or catch the first boom tube out of Olympus?

I don't remember the issue(s), but Darkseid was the entire reason(via manipulation and behind-the-scenes scheming) that the 'greek' gods, were divided into the Greek and the Roman gods, then he showed them who the real power in the 'god-realms' was.
