February 2013 Challenge Results! (Finally!)

Recommended Posts

So, this month's challenge was awesome. Seriously, the only thing that was bad about it was that us judges took a while to score this one, though for me at least it was having to figure out how to break the ties that showed up this month. We had Nova and Boratz tied for first, and Deojusto and Dinsdale Piranha tied for second, with Nova and Boratz both having a perfect score and Deojustust and Dinsdale Piranha having a score of 4.25 (averaging scores works out that way). In an ideal wold Nova and Boratz could share top score, and Dinsdale and Deojusto could share second and Darxeth (with the third highest score of 4) could be third. But this world isnt' perfect.

So

THIRD PLACE: Dinsdale Piranha:

Hulk vs. Nightmare

SECOND PLACE: Boratz:

Deathstroke vs. Ra's Al Ghul

FIRST PLACE: Nova Force Nova:

Princess Azula vs. Katara

Here's what the Judges said;

Culwich1

Nova Force Nova: Princess Azula VS Karara: http://www.electricf...t=0#entry410832

….. Where to begin with this match? The dedication and effort the author put into writing this clearly shows in the unfolding of the story and characters. I have never watched Avatar so don’t know the people involved, but I was drawn in nonetheless. Dialogue flows well and the structure of the story paces along just right, reaching its climactic conclusion where the battle occurs. This is what CBUB is all about - fans of characters creating a plausible and well scripted battle for the fighting to begin! Well done.

5/5

Treacherous

Nova Force Nova – 5.0

Princess Azula vs. Katara: I am utterly impressed. This from Nova who has always come across as “just wanna troll”. I admit he knows his source material, or at least he knows It better than me (which isn’t hard because I didn’t watch many episodes of this). Well spaced out sentences and paragraphs and nice usage of italics to show thoughts. Good punctuation. All in all, I just say wow. Wow. I’m utterly impressed. It read like an episode of the show.

Ruinus:

Nova Force Nova: Princess Azula VS Kararap

5 out of 5.

I admit I was a little disappointed when I first saw the two pictures of girls and read on only to find it didn't involve lesbians. Well, it was really well written and I love the alternate endings, especially since neither of them are "good". Though the real badguy is Aang for not being able to say anything at that last part, thereby avoiding any sort of conflict.

Congratulations to Nova Force Nova! Woot. As always, the winner will have their entry added to the CBUB Hall of Fame[/b] and everyone who participated this month will have their names added to the Tournament Participation History list.

Now all we need is for FoxFingers to come in here and hand out his prizes.

Also! The CBUB March 2013 Challenge is up, the thread will be modified by me in a bit, so if anyone has cool ideas for themes, we'd love to hear them.

Hey Judges, the folks which were not in the top three might be interested in what their scores and judges comments looked like, if you are interested in sharing for their edification.

xLEGACYx: Joker V Psylocke

3.5 out of 5

It was cool and fine (and we get to have a naked Psylocke) but it sorta well, I don't know. It wasn't really romance-y you know? Beyond that though it was well written and fun to read, though I kinda hoped that the Joker's messages rhymed, but whatever.

Bigballerju: Chucky VS Bella Swan

2 out of 5

Uh, it's not really a romance fight either. Unlock LEGACY's set up it's also notn well written or funny.

The Technomancer of Nesh: Tai Kamiya VS Ryo Akiyama

4 out of 5

Woah, there's alot that could be seriously misunderstood here. That aside, or maybe because of it, I found this story to be really good. Especially snice the whole age difference adds in a factor of "I really don't want anyone to win" and drives the ANGST factor up.

Leroypowell3: David Palmer VS Mephisto

3 out of 5

This one is kinda wierd because it's not really about love but more like Mephisto tempting David with an illusion of his dead wife. Though it was well-written I can't score it higher because it's not really meeting the spirit of the challenge to me. Sorry :(

HulkSmashSpammers: Brian Griffin & Glen Quagmire VS Chris Hansen

3 out of 5

This one is also well written and funny... and also doesn't really meet the criteria for me. Presumably Brian was the only person in love here, but love isn't really the focus, the focus seemed to be more "wacky insanity on To Catch A Predator... actually, going off topic for a moment but this set up doesn't make sense either. The girl's screenname is notatallunder18, so both Brian and Quagmire thought they were talking to a girl over 18, so what exactly were they going to be charged with? Hell, Brian has sex with the girl, who is over 18 if we follow the actual rules of To Catch A Predator, so there's no law breaking there.

Shockwave: Pit and Samus Aran vs. Tenchi Muyo! Cast and Tenchi Masaki

4 out of 5

I liked the idea tht the Masaki house has some random mindcontrolling effect that makes people fall in love with Tenchi for no reason at all. Though again, I don't like arcs being used in the challenges since they often times require past knowledge of the arc leading up to that entry, this one seemed to work well enough that I was able to figure out why Pit, Samus and that other guy were hanging out together.

Xenerack5: Santa Claus VS Ares (Xena)

2 out of 5

I didn't really like how this was written (the whole jibe of "ifnected for plot convenience" and "Was this worth 2 seconds of exposition?" made no sense to me) and this one is even less related to love than all the other ones combined.

Boratz: Deathstroke VS Ra’s Al Ghul

5 out of 5

This one is great. So far it's my favorite to win.

Darxeth: Spider-Man VS Sabretooth

4 out of 5

Pretty good set up. Unlike the other ones that I felt didn't meet the criteria, int his one I can understand that Peter's love for MJ is what drives his insane murderous rage.

Dinsdale Piranha: Hulk (70’s) VS Nightmare (Marvel)

3.5 out of 5

I really don't know how to explain all of these low grades beyond the fact that none of them seem like romance/love entries too me. Now this one I understand, since the Hulk is the dude I wouldn't associate with love, but still.

Ninjaman1848: Ryu Hayabusa vs. Taskmaster

0 out of 5

This isn't a love/romance story? I mean, it is familial love but... I can't even attempt to justify that with the challenge for Valentine's Day. Or even if I did somehow accept it, it's not very good. It has all of two sentences devoted to Ryu's sadness over the death of his father. Even the SpiderMan v Sabretooth fight had some sort of lead up and exploration of Peter's feelings for MJ.

Corvette1710: Bane vs. The Joker

0 out of 5

This also isn't a love/romance story? Bane kidnapped Harley because he wanted to find out her fighting style, Joker is getting her back to save face. So...

Patrickthekid: Barnabas Collins vs. Elena Gilbert

3.5 out of 5

Eh. I sorta found the whole Twilight stuff unnecessary, plus the whole thing with Victoria in the beginning wasn't needed either. Though maybe the point was that these vampires fall in and out of love easily? No clue.

Ending note:

I feel really down on all the entries this month, except for a few of them, because they weren't exactly what I expected from a theme of love. I mean sure, some of them had references to love, but in the same way that the Terminator movie has love, yet no one would say that's a romance movie.

EDIT: In this original run I missed Deojusto's entry, though I did score it at a later time with a 4, though I never actually wrote down any thoughts on it.

I feel like I'm at the Oscars. Not great at public speaking but I would just like to thank everyone that participated in some way(judges, writers) in this challenge. You guys are awesome. Got a tie with Boratz. That's just amazing.

Mh...gotta PM FoxFingers right? Will do that soonish. Thanks again everyone. I really enjoyed this.

I was just trying to play mine around the whole Valentines day. Joker killed Angel on Valentines and it pushed Psylocke over the edge.

Congratulations to Nova!!! This was a pretty fun challenge... Next month I may try to be a judge and see what that is like but if there are more judges than participants next time around, then I probably see about just putting in a match... I'll see what happens.

Congrats to Nova once again!!!

I gotta ask, if this wasn't part of my story arc would that have given me a higher grade? I know it probably wouldn't have put me on the top but still gotta know.

Wow, this was the tightest vote yet, and in the challenge with the most participation to boot. This one almost could've gone either way.

Congrats, Nova. It was truly well-deserved. And... *gasp*... it wasn't a bromance! :P

Congrats to Culwych and Shockwave for winning their respective draws as well. I'm sure this takes at least some of the sting out of that random "F" grade, huh, SW?

Congrats all around to everyone that managed to get an entry in this challenge. Maybe if I win one of these things again, I might help judge in a future challenge.

No, usually I grade down on arcs if they rely on prior-arc knowledge, but this one I felt stood all on it's own.

Ok. Then I did write it properly. That was my intention.

Guys, Nesh was totally bummed on #cbub about his placing in the tourney earlier. Any ideas on how to cheer him up?

Yup, he try again and place better next time. That always cheered me up when I lost back in the day. Here's Nesh's score from me:

Technomancer of Nesh – 3.5

Tai Kamiya vs. Ryo Akiyama: I liked the star-crossed lovers thing. The different ages due to some weird dimensional whoo ha and the boy fighting the odds to be with her. I like that. I watched a little Digimon when it used to come on. I didn’t realize it was this deep. I felt like I was reading some romance comic, which I guess was the point. This one and Nova’s felt like I wasn’t reading a CBUB set up, but more walked into the middle of an actual fan-fic. Anywho, it was good. Better than average, but a little slow for my taste, but still above average.

P.S. I did not get around to scoring everyone. The other judges took care of this tourney. I love my moderators. They are great.

And I was inspired by a few fan fics that I had read.

I'll let you guys in on a little secret. My match basically was me writing fanfiction and cutting it off before the scene.

All the set ups are basically fanfic anyway.
