Why do DBZ themed threads never die?

Recommended Posts

So it seems like anytime DBZ is mentioned right away the fans start getting crap. Like Nilan said something along the lines "DBZ fans think it is the best written show", but I haven't seen one fan on this site say that. Matter of fact I think a lot of the fans here will say it doesn't have the best plot.

Another thing I noticed is some of you think DBZ fans here can't use logic. Again from what I have seen it is quite the opposite. I think every DBZ fan on this site uses intelligence when it comes to talking about the series. The only exception is The Dark Prince, but he hasn't been on in a while *knocks on wood*.

I joined in December of 2010 and since I have been here TDP is the only DBZ fan that would deserve flak. So I ask, before my time here were there a bunch of ravenous DBZ fans on the site? Did they all scream "Goku is teh best"?

The worst DBZ fans are illiterate, idiotic fanboys who wouldn't know a good story if it kicked them in the nards. They are deeply, emotionally invested in the belief that Goku could kick anyone's ass under any conditions and will loudly and violently argue (poorly) this point at the slightest provocation.

The best DBZ fans are people who really like a shitty, outdated Japanese cartoon show for children and occasionally gush about it on the internet.

There is a fairly wide swath between the two for open mockery.

But that seems you are describing fans in general, I am asking about the ones on EF. Besides all fanboys whether they like Goku or Superman are idiotic, illiterate, etc.

Trying to argue about Goku with a DBZ fan is like arguing with a Christian about God. No matter what logical corner you back them into, they escape by loudly proclaiming that their deity can do ANYTHING and you're just an idiot.

Umm excuse me I am a fan of DBZ and I rarely act like the best DBZ fans Soberguy described. If you don't like DBZ fine but to say all DBZ fans are bad is BS when you don't know everyone who is a DBZ fan or not. I stopped watching DBZ a long time ago when it ended on Toonami. The real good DBZ fans are silent because they like me have been done with DBZ for a long time now. The fans of DBZ now on EF are younger fans just getting into it because maybe there younger or they never watched the show or read the manga.

Me I hate other DBZ fans on EF that think DBZ characters are unbeatable and more powerful then most on EF. True DBZ fans know Goku and others have to train real hard to stay as skilled and powerful as they are. If you know DBZ then you know those characters have limits. They have to train hard to maintain those levels and skills.

By the way the Dragonball Manga was well written and so was the Dragonball Z one. It was fun, had a great adventure, and more. Dragonball GT and and most of the movies were horrible.

Most of the time it's because DBZ fans believe their characters are multi-galaxy level busting powerhouses (Which they aren't). However at the same time it all depends on your power.

For me, I'd say Haruhi or Lina could solo the DBZ verse, but that's because my interpretation of power is that it's more powerful to create than it is to destroy.

However, good or bad, we have to admit that without Speed Racer DBZ never would have made it, and without DBZ we never would have got the stuff we got today thanks to DBZ's commercialism

Well that could be said about a lot of fans, but again since I have been on EF I haven't seen anyone like that.

Edit: I don't think anyone is understanding me. I am not talking about DBZ fans in general, I'm talking about the ones on EF. Why do we get crap? Like I said other then The Dark Prince I haven't seen one rabid DBZ fan.

I have a hard time excusing even reasonable DBZ fans like bigballerju on the grounds that the show really was fairly terrible.

Oh trust me alot of the episodes weren't good. But like I said the Mangas for Dragonball and Dragonball Z were good. If people read the manga they would like DB and DBZ more.

@Hayesmeister5651 I thinks its really any ridiculously stupid fan acts that way its always and only a few people act that way here (Dark Prince) I think its more of a dislike for stupid fanboys then DBZ fans

@Soberguy Now is that really fair? I can understand not liking the show my best friend hates the show but thats really no reason to mock someone who does. I enjoyed the show and a majoirity of the cast is well written (Not Goku) and yeah the animation is outdated (And still some times is better than todays animations.) I could make an argument that it isnt just for children but I shouldnt have to who cares what show someone likes?

I see what you saying it just seems like people here on EF think all the DBZ fans are fanboys which isnt the case.

As for Soberguy mocking people well "He's the best at what he does and what he does isn't nice" hence why he is Old Man Logan.

Wait, you meant this as a positive thing, right?

I meant it as whatever way you want to interpret it.

Good cause it brought shows like Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Reign etc.

Bad cause it brought shows like Naruto, Death Note, Code Geass etc.

I do not like how people are jobbing on DBZ fans like they were diseased. I personally think the only reason people dislike them, is because those people are quick to get mad and ugly. I won't name anyone, but how many times have you seen "DBZ fanboys are stupid," or "You're an idiot" or worst? I rather like DBZ and to this day is still a great show. I personally like that show way more than all you Pokemon Naruto shows hands down. Whether you like it or not, people can like that show and not be considered lame.

Is DBZ outdated? sure, is that bad? no, is it better than most shows on now? yes. is it better than Marvel and DC< all preference, so no the answer is no.

DBZ's fights are great, compared to any Marvel or DC cartoon, the drawings are better too, if you look at the old Justice League show, (The WB one) you see the drawings all bland, with everyone having huge chests, square jaws, and little deatail. Yest you see DBZ is still good and it was a lot older show.

Personally at least, I am always wary of DBZ debates because I am always dreading someone claiming DBZ fighters are light speed or faster, that every blast is a planet busting hit, or that some of them are galaxy busting. Also, the whole power level thing is tedious, as it seems to be entirely divorced from their actual showings.

Also, I found out (at least, I think I did) that alot of the canon rules for DBZ and such are dictated by some DBZ forum (can't remember it's name).

Also, something that has colored my opinion of the DBZ fandom in general is the whole "Akira Toriyama fake interview" thing. It's commonly refered to as proof straight from Akira Toriyama that DBZ fighters are light speed or faster on several parts of the Internet and... it's a fake interview.

I personaly watch it for the story and I must say it is a very intresting story mostly because of the main part I care about Vegeta.

Vegeta is the shining gem story wise for this anime having a fairly large amount of character development.

Other characters that help the story-Mirai Trunks,Piccolo,Freeza, if its Dragonball Kuririn and Tenshinhan all these characters have very intresting stories and I found them very enjoyable.

The story isn't that great I thought it was amazing as a kid, and I watched it again recently without the same result. All I can say about DBZ is that I'm glad that I had the chance to watch it as a kid because it introduced me to Anime.

Guest Ivan

I have a personal vendetta against DBZ fans, largely because I used to be one.

I got into DBZ in 1996, when I was in junior high school, long before it was on American television, and in 1998 the only person I could find to talk about it with on the ENTIRE INTERNET was this guy in New Jersey named Greg Werner who created the *original* Ultimate DBZ Information site and he told me where online I could get fansubs of the movies. He was also learning Japanese and worked his ass off over many nights- he was likely the first person to translate the Daizenshyu into English (or at least he was the first one to post his translation online, before the non-translated books were even available commercially in America,) he posted the complete translated list of every attack used in the manga, anime, and movies, and his enthusiasm was infectious- it made me want to watch more anime. I bought Jin Roh: Wolf Brigade and Ghost in the Shell on VHS, entirely on his recommendation. To this day he's the ONLY person I'd ever trust to answer a Dragonball related question.

Anime was a fad for me, my interest remained but mellowed out to the point where I don't treat it differently from any other form of animation- if it's good, I'll watch it. If it's crap, no thanks. Funimation got a hold of DBZ and sliced it up into an unintelligible mess, then Toonmai ran it into the ground (and consistently played episodes out of order) but the popularity of DBZ meant that several other, better Shonen series (like Samurai Troopers and Gundam Wing) kept getting shuffled or bumped from the lineup. Watching the episodes again, in English, I began to realize how it's all flash and no substance, and anything in the anime after the death of Freeza is 75% garbage (after the Cell game that number goes even higher.) Couple my declining lack of interest with the sudden spike in DBZ popularity- and the fact that most every DBZ fan online was young, naive, and (most importantly) not a comic book reader. This led to a number of early arguments where, in spite of my superior knowledge of BOTH subjects (at the time- remember the Buu saga and the later movies hadn't even aired yet in America,) DBZ fans would insist that Goku at the beginning of DBZ was already far stronger than Superman or Thor or Silver Surfer could ever hope to be in spite of the fact that these people couldn't even tell me WHICH Superman they were talking about (this part is still largely true.)

This led to further complications as well-meaning fans tried to provide mathematical justification for their answers, which always turned into a nightmare. Someone tried to calculated the force necessary to overcome the gravitational forces holding a planet together. Someone else tried to figure out the precise energy required to extinguish and subsequently re-ignite a main sequence star. And every day, more and more DBZ fans who knew less than I did were coming here to argue. Eventually I began to hate them on principle.

Flash forward to now, DBZ fans have a longstanding reputation for having a poor grasp on power tiers. (Darkseid is a GOD who routinely kills OTHER GODS. Nobody in the DBZ universe presents much of a challenge. Sorry.) For as much as I despise feats, DBZ is a show that trades almost exclusively on feats, so people with absolutely no ability to think abstractly or conceptually are drawn to it. That's my main beef with all DBZ fans, they immediately cling to "Harder Better Faster Stronger = Always Wins" which is of course contrary to the very point of heroes in the first place.

I'm certain that many of you have seen the same amount of Dragonball I have by now (possibly more, as I skipped most of GT, which started out promising, but became 99% garbage.) Some of you undoubtedly have more of the manga than I do (I only collected Dragonball) and for what it's worth, there seems to be at least SOME standardization in the English spelling of character names (Bejita? Klilyn? Chowzu?) The DBZ fanbase also seems to have shifted slightly, toward people who are trading on nostalgia rather than insane, fanatical devotion, and as this thread indicates, there is SOME attempt at outreach, DBZ fans striving to make peace, admitting that just because a cartoon guy can punch really hard in his little universe, that doesn't guarantee he's invincible. Still, there's a long way to go. The GOOD parts of Dragonball/DBZ (there are no good parts of GT) often get overlooked because people focus on the fighting. Dude, that entire universe is completely insane! (Mostly thanks to Dr. Slump, but still.) The president of the world is a talking dog. There are dinosaurs and giant animals. The entire planet's crust is made of incredibly fragile rocks which not only shatter with the slightest impact, but FLOAT into the air any time someone starts yelling. There was a mountain that was constantly on fire, and the solution tuned out to be for an old dude to shoot more fire out of his hands to stop it.

For the record, though, no part of Dragonball, DBZ, or DBGT is "well-written." That adjective is reserved for only quality fiction.

Thats why I always tell people to read the manga rather then watch the anime. DBZ fighters use up alot of there power for all sorts of things like Ki attacks, martial arts, flight, and more. All this is required to have KI and that KI can't go forever which is prove as to why after a good while in fights DBZ fighters do get tired. DBZ fighters can only fight at light speed and nothing else. DBZ Fighters don't just throw planet busting attacks whenever they want. If people really know DBZ then you know after one planet busting attack that takes up alot of there power and they will be very weak from it. People who claim all these feats DBZ has don't know nothing and those are the fans that make real Dragonball fans look bad. Yeah DBZ fighters can build up there power again in a fight but they only have very few times they can keep doing it. Watch Dragonball or Dragonball Z to see when Goku does a huge attack he has no more power. Thats why he sometimes in those situations is given a sensu bean because without it his power would take a long time to build back up. Prove again Vegeta and Goku took a long time to heal after there first battle. Both were healing in there seperate tanks where Freeza's people healed Vegeta and Goku was being healed elsewhere. This is my opinion of the whole DBZ thing on here so others will feel differently. DBZ fighters have alot of limits that most people who say there fans ignore or dont even know about do to ignorance or lack of knowledge from not reading the Manga.
