  1. Hi All. It has been maybe 7 months since re-opening the site. Thanks for hanging out and participating! Here's some of the things that I'm looking at for the site in the new year. Monthly Flash Fiction Tournaments - monthly tournament will resume with a new Rating system. The 5 star rating system that the forum has is cool but too limited. There is just not enough flexibility in the Forum 5-Star System to give more fine grained scores (like, say, a 4.5 or 4.6). So the Tournaments will return when I build a new rating mechanism for our wonderful Match Judges to use. Fantasy Teams - the fantasy teams has been fun, I think. It is an evolving system, and is getting updates and changes based on feedback of it. We'll keep on playing and improving it as we go! CBUB Database - There are several Wikis out there which have data about the characters that are in the CBUB Database. I'm hoping to connect to those Wikis and use their data to make the entries in the CBUB database easier to use in battles. The VS Battles Wiki is one that could be really useful. Other Stuff - I'll keep fixing things or adding features when you bring them to my attention, of course. Just let me know. You can, of course, use the site features like the Blog section to post things that interest you. I use mine for the occasional Anime review. I would like the site to be the best it can be at what it is! All that said... the CBUB has returned to a very different world than the one it left. As far as getting new members goes, this is probably about as good as it gets. I point this out because some of you have asked or mentioned it. I've tried running ads and so forth - it's money down the drain to no effect. This is a very niche kind of website and this is not the halcyon days of the 1990's when comics were king and the internet was young. Anyways, this site is here because you asked for it to be here - and as long as you are entertained by it, that's really all that matters to me, personally. I'll just keep doing what I do and trying to make it better. Thanks!

  2. Wait, I won? Well, what do you know? After making four semis and three straight finals, I finally lucked up and won one of these things. 😛 First of all, I want to thank everyone who's competed in these Fantasy Drafts and made good picks and fun, compelling arguments for their characters. Also, thank you for those that had enough faith in my picks and arguments to allow me to get the win this time out. Also, thank you to Movie-Brat to making such a good Draft team that allowed to to make your first Draft final. To be honest, a couple of these match-ups could've gone either way, votes-wise. Definitely nothing for you to be ashamed of, man.

  3. This has been one hell of a CBUB debate. Really a good throwdown. I'm siding with Raphael argument. Cass is the physical underdog and fighting out of her weight class. Nothing unusual for her but we are using MMA rules, so I think that favors Raph. Even if slightly.

  4. THE BOTTOM LINE Andel Sanap: Welcome back, everyone! This match has gone on for longer than expected, but we appear to be in the homestretch. Team Mortal Kombat has taken control of the Gorge, while Team Forever Red has been forced through the portal to TCC Arena. Al Rossi: The Gorge is littered with the bodies of various Rangers. I think I see Mack’s head over there by the remains of Cyrax. Meanwhile, it appears that Tommy, Jason, and Shane are the last three standing in TCC Arena. They’ve finished off Baraka and D’Vorah, and Cassie and Jacqui are down for the count, as well. Andel Sanap: Raiden, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Shao Kahn, and Mileena appear to be at impasse. They’re arguing by the portal. Shao Kahn: Enough of this, Raiden! Let’s go through the portal and finish this battle! Raiden: Shao Kahn! We don’t know how many of the Rangers are left in the arena! Sub-Zero: Raiden is right. We need to plan our attack. Shao Kahn: Bah! Cowards! All of you! Mileena! On to our final victory! Mileena: By your will, Shao Kahn! Al Rossi: But look on the other side of the portal! Tommy and Jason are standing on either side with swords drawn, and Shane has the Hawk Blaster! Mileena charges through the portal and… Mileena: ARRRRGH! Andel Sanap: And Mileena is down! Shao Kahn is right behind her but the other two Rangers strike with their blades! Al Rossi: And now Shane is getting to the act with his own sword! Shao Kahn swings his hammer wildly in a rage but the Rangers are just moving too quick for him! Blow after blow and Kahn is staggering! Shane and Jason grab a hold the Kahn by his arms! Jason Scott Lee (Mighty Morphin’): Tommy! Now! Tommy Oliver (Zeo): Alright! HYAH! Andel Sanap: By the Force! Connects with the Zeo V Flying Kick! Sparks fly and down goes the Kahn! Al Rossi: But out of the portal! Raiden, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion! Raiden blasts all three Rangers with lightning and sends them sprawling down the pyramid! Andel Sanap: Jason gets snagged with the kunai! Scorpion: Get over here! Al Rossi: Yanked in close and decapitated for the kill! Meanwhile Sub-Zero freezes Shane and smashes him into pieces! Tommy’s back on his feet but the end has got to be near! Raiden: You have fought valiantly, Tommy Oliver. Stand down and surrender. Tommy Oliver (Zeo): Sorry, Raiden. But a Power Ranger never surrenders! HYAH! Andel Sanap: Mr. Oliver charges ahead! He isn’t going down without a…By the Force! Al Rossi: Frozen to the ground by Sub-Zero! And nailed in the chest by the kunai! Raiden’s hand is glowing again and… ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZAP! Referee: Winner: Team Mortal Kombat! Andel Sanap: Now that was most definitely a fatality. Al Rossi: That’s for sure, Andel. Mercy is going to be working overtime after this one. But Raiden, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion are the last men standing, and secure victory for their team. For Philippa Forrester and Andel Sanap, I’m Al Rossi saying good night for the Gorge! Frost: Ugh! Why wasn’t I used for this fight? Rita Repulsa: Ah, shut up, sister!

  8. Hey everybody. It's that time of year again when we pay Amazon Web Services their annual fee for electric ferret. That's a big hit to the website budget, so I won't be running any prize tournaments for several months. However, you all should absolutely feel free to organize for fun tournaments if you would like to. Thanks!

  12. Sorry, your logic does not work for me at all. Corona beer has not suffered in sales at all despite sharing a name with a dread virus. In fact, as far as I understand it, Corona remains the most valuable beer brand whose sales have actually gone UP! Your premise is false. And also Cats rule, dogs drool.

  13. Skeletons (Undead): Found in most tombs and catacombs, and the standard undead companion to any necromancer. Goblins: Alongside Orcs and Kobolds, you'll find this creature in numerous myths and legends (and at the end of most adventurer's weapons) Lich (D&D): What do you get when you mix the stongest sorcerors or wizards in the land with a sprinkling of undeath - that's right, the spellcasting, terror inspiring, world conquering Lich. Nymph: the sexy ancient female greek type Imp: the small mischievous demonic type Bee from The Babysitter films: hot and deadly, the satanic killer is in the house.

  16. Thanks to Fox for keeping this going, the fantasy draft has become one of my favorite aspects of the site. Thanks to CT for a fun final round! I think this was the best of the fantasy seasons, not just because I won, but the scenarios and slots were more fun. I'd say my team was nicely balanced with The Dagda, Orks and Weird Al all doing well. Looking forward to next season!

  18. It is absolutely fair to call out when somebody is trying to leverage powers a character has which are beyond the intended scope of the slot. For example, Jinny Hex apparently has a green lantern ring laying around. Is it fair to debate a character using a green lantern ring in the Wild West slot? Not at all. So we ignore it.

  23. Mr. Miyagi did the prompt basically to a T in the Karate Kid though. He took a kid who was pretty much a talentless screw-up and trained him better than people who had been training in martial arts for years. That's literally the prompt. Apollo only trained someone who already had incredibly good fundamentals and just needed help with the specifics of boxing. Miyagi effectively already did the prompt, Apollo really hasn't, so Miyagi should win

  25. A bit unexpected in the results of the last one, but as always, you've do manage to find ways to rebound from any of the Turtles' losses or draws in a pretty constructive way, and that really shows your skills as a writer Rakai, you're definitely growing with each one of these that you do. The match worked out pretty well too, as the intensity was pretty explosive, a bit comical, and worked out real well in portraying both Donatello and Bonne Jenet's polar opposite personalities, so yeah in that too, I found it to be quite entertaining. An interesting note too, if the protective garb around the Wack a Mole hammer came off, I think that Bonne would have found it even more embarrassing to her, heh, but as it is I like that segment of the match, because you manage to utilize a benign object in a way that is comical based on what it is, but could also be more significant based on the person utilizing it, so good stuff from me. Raph is really going to have to work through this one too, as Ralph Jones seems to be the type of opponent who can do a lot of damage, especially rapid fire and explosive damage if he gets in to close to the Ninja Turtle, so Raph we'll probably need to outlast his attacks in endurance and defense, in order to close in. Stealth is a good tactic for him here too, as Ralph is definitely trained in militant tactics as a mercenary, but he is also the type who appears to be flashy, so by countering that aspect of his personality with a stealthy and strategic approach might given Raphael even more of an opening than he might otherwise have. Finally, Ralph specializes mostly in punches and upper body ki based attacks, if Raphael utilizes attacks at his lower body, he might gain a few decent attacks on his own as he needs them, as it is hard to say how prepared Ralph would be for a barrage at his lower body.

  26. I'm not weighing in on the fight in total one way or the other, but I would definitely not say he dodge sniper fire point blank. He was already in motion and the shot simply missed him. That's really more of an anti-feat for the guy shooting. It shows that he's nimble enough that someone with a gun has a hard time hitting him, I agree, but it's a massive stretch to call that "dodging point blank shots"

  27. WOW! Two characters that I added are in a fight together as well as Chloe’s first official match. 🙂 I’m not sure who would win here. I would like for Chloe to get a win, but something tells me that Trini will get the most votes. I give the match a 5.0.

  35. It's widely accepted that Spider-man level threats are outside of the realm of what the Batfamily can deal with with no prep. I understand Cassandra Cain is the best martial artist of the bunch, but that honestly might work against her here. She's less adept at using tools based on what Magnamax said, and that will cost her when her opponent is stronger, faster, and more durable than her.

  38. Aloy crouched low on the catwalk as Cerberus soldiers passed underneath. They were looking for her. But after years of sneaking up on Grazers in Mother's Embrace, she could keep herself hidden from a few frantic humans. Even on their own ship. The Cerberus cruiser was massive and reminded her of the cauldrons back home. The halls were dark and metallic. But at least she didn't have to fight through waves of machines to get where she needed to be. Not that she wasn't prepared for a fight if it came to that. Garrus' Black Widow hung off her shoulder, where she used to keep her bow and arrows. It was a less graceful weapon, for sure, but its firepower matched that of her blast arrows. And the clips took up far less space. But the real challenge was its weight. It was heavy. Like the guilt in her chest. She peeked over the rails once the soldiers left. Below, there were Ravager-sized pods lining the walls, each with a turian silhouette under its surface. Garrus was down there somewhere. And she needed to find him. She climbed down silently and effortlessly, moving from pod to pod, searching for the turian face she knew by heart. The face she never could have imagined existed only a few months ago. Nothing. Next pod. Hide. Nothing. Next pod. Unfamiliar. Next pod. Hide. It was a slow search. Next pod... She slowed to a stop next to it, recognizing something in the blue markings on the face within. It was the face she'd studied every day since she first saw it. Garrus Vakarian. She only stared down at him for enough time to catch her breath before she went to work yanking at the cords on the side of the pod and pushing at the lid so she could get to him. He was only inches away. All she had to do was wake him up and they could leave. Together. It took all of her strength to move the lid, but once ajar, it slid away, revealing the body underneath. Her palm found his face, thumb tracing the lines of his mandibles. He was cold and slick. Never a good sign. This technology was beyond her. What would she do if he didn't wake? What could she do? Where would she go? Aloy shook him gently. Then harder. Nothing. But he was still breathing. He was still there. Just... gone. How had she lost this family she'd only just gained? Her focus chimed, alerting her to the approach of Cerberus soldiers. But there was still time before they arrived. "Garrus," she whispered, a hopeless attempt to reanimate him. "Do you remember when you found me?" *** A grassy green prairie rolled on for as far as I could see. I leaned back onto the hill, feeling the warmth of the sun on my cheek. Earth. What a beautiful place. Lush. Empty. Abandoned. But it wasn't empty, was it? My own perceptions confused me. Surely someone lived here. All I could remember were the creatures. The machines, someone had called them. I'd fought one the size of my starship. A Thunderjaw. The word came from thin air. Yeah, a Thunderjaw. "Garrus," a voice whispered. "Do you remember when you found me?" There was a heat at my side. I wasn't alone. She was sitting next to me, fiery and brave and human. Had she always been there? Aloy. "Of course." I couldn't recall. "You were fighting the Thunderjaw." My own words surprised me. "And the damned thing took my ship right out of the sky." She stared at the ground, letting grass slide between her fingers before she ripped it up. "I was alone before then. An outcast." She forced a chuckle. "And I didn't know anything about the world." "You knew more than everyone on your planet," I chided softly. She was a genius. I still remembered her face in the firelight as she pieced my ship together one part at a time. And when she had questions, her eyes sparked with wonderlust. I'd give her half an answer before she figured it out on her own. After all that, she probably knew more about my ship than I did. Aloy didn't react. Didn't even look at me. She was lost in the rolling plains. "I never imagined I'd leave the Sacred Lands," she managed. "And then you took me to the stars." I'd been stranded on Earth for weeks. In the meantime, we'd traded stories of Palaven and the Nora, bonded over weaponry and sharpshooting, and used the machines in the valley to repair my ship to its functioning flying glory. It was only fair that I take her for the ride of her life --show her how small Earth was in the grand scheme of the universe. How was I supposed to know she'd never want to go back? "I've experienced so much. You've shown me the unimaginable." Her voice broke. "Everything is... so much bigger now." Aloy's braided and beaded hair fell over her shoulder, hiding her face. I reached out to brush it away. She was too proud to cry. But she could trust me, couldn't she? And then my fingers passed right through her. She kept talking, as if she'd felt nothing. "I'm not afraid of being alone. I've been alone before." Her breathing became shallow and ragged. "But if you don't wake up... You'll never know how much I..." If I didn't wake up...? "Aloy, what do you mean?" She looked up suddenly, like she'd heard something. Her focus could pick up things from far off. Things my scanners couldn't even read. "They're coming..." "Who is coming?" But in my gut, I knew it was Cerberus. Aloy and I had met up with a turian fleet on its way to Palaven. I'd promised Aloy we'd go to the Citadel from there. We were on a galactic tour or sorts. But the fleet had been ambushed, boarded, and seized. And we flew right into their trap. I scanned the valley, realizing how cold and lifeless it truly was. There were no machines. No wind. No heat from the sun. The only warmth here radiated from Aloy. She jumped to her feet in a defensive stance, ready to fight. My rifle hung from her shoulder. "Aloy," I tried again, reaching for her leg. Reaching for her warmth. But I passed right through. And then she vanished. Popped right out of existence in front of me. I had only blinked. And she was gone. "ALOY!" From the horizon, a dark shadow swept over the valley, eating away this world I'd somehow imagined. The shadow moved faster and faster, coming for me. "It's not real, Garrus," I scolded myself. "Aloy needs you to wake the hell up!" And the shadow consumed me. *** Aloy held Black Widow just like Garrus had taught her. He’d emphasized four principles --aim, hold, sight, and shot. Similar to the principles she used with her bow. But this was nothing like the ebb and flow of her arrows. This was a power she had to squeeze tight and hold in her core lest it escape her. She’d left Garrus’ side only to set traps throughout the room. Near doorways. Away from the other pods. If she could fight machines back home, she could defeat a few humans in space. An explosion sounded as one of her trip wires went off. Cerberus had arrived. Aloy glanced over her shoulder at the pod where Garrus was stirring. She couldn't leave now that she knew he was alive. Whatever she’d done had been enough to wake him. But she needed to defend him until they could escape. She wouldn’t leave him behind again. Aloy stared down the Black Widow’s sights and waited for the soldiers to descend upon her.

  39. I do believe that while Vulture may have superior weapons and tech, Sam has more experience and skills that will ultimately be the deciding factor. Vulture faced off against Spidey who has power but lacked any experience or skills. Yeah Peter is intelligent and fought in the airport battle, but he is still a kid. He did some stupid stuff and made a bunch of stupid decisions. I think in a battle, Sam will ultimately defeat Vulture

  40. Clarence Odbody could take them both on a journey of what life would have been like had they never met. Throughout the Batman series, and especially in the Arkham games we learn about the dysfunctional relationship they have and how they are the challenge that the other craves. By the end of their journey they’d feel grateful for each other and exchange gifts. Possibly even build on a sort of mutual peace. Maybe Clarence Odbody was the true hero that Gotham deserves.

  42. After noodling on it a bit, here's my thoughts on addressing some of this. Season Length: It sounds like one season a month is too fast for folks. So, probably seasons should run two months. I don't really have a dog in the fight about how long a "Season" should be because I don't run a team (unless I'm required to do so for the purposes of making it an even number). My assumption was that people would enjoy something new each month and I'm just here to provide entertainment. So, two months sounds like what people want. Number of Rounds: I guess 10 to 12 regular rounds would need to become the new standard. Followed by "play-offs". And I don't know what play-offs look like, honestly, but I have heard the suggestion "Final Four" so that seems reasonable. I'm not clear how that set-up works, yet. Umpire's Match-up Algorithm I'll make Umpire less aggressive about trying to promote winners into new matches. That's essentially what I hear you want. Although, to be fair, I've heard it from exactly 1 person. Feel free to chime in if you have a different idea about it. Thanks!

  43. Congrats, C.T. and Magnamax! Good drafting and debating for your teams. Well, there were a couple of matches that The Patchworks probably could have won, but overall, it's the only team (so far) where every member that participated has a winning record.
