Appearing in the show's seventh series, Clara is a companion of the eleventh incarnation of alien time traveller the Doctor (portrayed by Matt Smith). Over the course of 2012 and 2013, the character is introduced as three distinct though similarly-named people. The first two incarnations die during the episode in which they appear, while the third becomes the Doctor's companion. While distinct, the characters are all played by Coleman, and are apparently meant to be regarded as the same person, thus setting up a mystery to be resolved. Despite appearing as Oswin Oswald in the seventh series premiere, Coleman did not take over from Karen Gillan as the show's female lead until the mid-series Christmas special, this time portraying Victorian governess and barmaid Clara Oswin Oswald. At the end of that episode, Coleman is seen playing a third version of the character, this time from contemporary London and named Clara Oswald. From the following episode, Clara Oswald travels as the Doctor's full-time companion. Coleman has confirmed that she is due to appear in the eighth series, which is scheduled to begin filming in September 2013. Oswin Oswald is introduced in the first episode of the seventh series, "Asylum of the Daleks". She is the sole remaining survivor of the Starship Alaska, which crashed on the Asylum, a prison planet for insane Dalek. She has lived on the planet for nearly a year when the Doctor (Matt Smith) and his companions Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) arrive at the Dalek Asylum to disable the planet's force field (an army of sane Daleks waits in orbit to destroy the Asylum). She communicates with them and helps them escape from the Daleks by hacking into the Dalek security systems and also erasing all of the Daleks' memories of the Doctor. She helps the trio escape and in return the Doctor tries to rescue her; but he discovers she has already been captured and fully converted into a Dalek cyborg. The Daleks had sought to preserve Oswin's intellect; unable to cope with her conversion, she retreated into a fantasy of survival. Faced with the truth, Oswin is nearly overcome by her Dalek personality, but is ultimately unable to kill the Doctor. She fulfils her promise by deactivating the force field. Making a final request that the Doctor remember her, she allows the Doctor, Amy, and Rory to escape before the Daleks waiting in orbit destroy the planet.
