Tonight on Khazanian Heroes, Khazan's premier show for the goings-on in the hero community. There were four global threats thwarted today, no less then five heroes saved the city, and there was a titanic battle on top of the Dollar building downtown. But first, we have the segment of our show called "Where are they now?" Join us as we take a trip down memory lane and find heroes that have faded into the background, but to whom the city and maybe even the world owe a debt of gratitude. Tonight we are going to go through the life of Brain Rush, one the of the city's most active heroes when he was around. We will go through his rise, his greatest moment, and finally what drove him away from the heroic lifestyle. The first recorded appearance of Brain Rush was in stopping a robbery at a bank. It wasn't big, but it was impressive. He stopped the thief long enough for the police to arrive. Not long after that he teamed up with a renowned martial artist, Horace Charleston, who later took on the name Charlie Horse. Together, these two were a formidable force. The height of his career was when he and Charlie Horse stopped the feared Lang syndicate. However, tragedy was not far along. One of their long-standing villains, The Flow, caused an explosion during an escape. Charlie Horse was caught in this explosion, causing the loss of his legs. This is the kind of event that would cause most, lesser heroes to step down, but Brain Rush pushed on. He joined forces with the KPD as a negotiator and profilist. It fit the hero's power perfectly. However the high stress of the job wore down his psyche and in one moment of weakness...he snapped. After a stint in a psychiatric ward, he decided to retire from the limelight of superheorics, and to instead help fellow heroes as a psychiatrist. (co-written by Mr. S)

Personality: *click*."Ha, hero indeed" thought Ross Bryant. He had been watching the old tapes of his career as Brain Rush all day. To think he had been a superhero was hard to imagine for Ross. He had to struggle through each day with the problems of his clients. In a way it was an extension of avoiding his own problems, which led to his breakdown before. He couldn't believe he had done that to his boss...over what, coffee? The stress had been building up though, and that was the proverbial straw as they say. Now was different though, he truly felt like he was making a difference. He was one of the most successful hero psychics out there. There would probably be a lot more menaces out there if it weren't for him. His calm demeanour, even measured voice, and his quirky expressions helped people flock to him. His experience in the field helped too. Not to mention his unique technique he had developed with the use of his powers. Yes, it was different, he was helping them, and in doing so...himself.

Slow down

*click* What was it that made Brain Rush so successful on the streets? How was it that he was able to subdue criminals with such ease? During the filming of this segment, a criminal who Brain Rush had subdued in his earlier years chose to speak up. This man had chosen to remain anonymous, so we have digitally altered his voice and appearance. "It's something else, really. You see all that footage of us trying to keep our balance, it doesn't do the feeling justice. It's as though the rest of the world is suddenly going a hundred miles an hour. Every movement is so smooth that you can't keep up with it. You can't even walk right when he does it to you. You just stand still and hope you don't fall over." Brain Rush, you see, was an accomplished mentalist, able to alter a person's perception of time by speeding up or slowing down their brain processes. In this case, Brain Rush had slowed down the criminals' minds until they couldn't function without injuring themselves.

Speed up

  • Double Damage Causes Double the damage to Senshi Training class characters.
  • Area Effect This attack causes damage in a large area.
The alternative was also true, of course. This was displayed most often with Brain Rush's partner, Charlie Horse, a martial artist who had trained himself to move his body with precision, no matter what the state of his mind. In Charlie Horse's memoirs, provided by the people at White Lion Books, and read by one of our actors, he describes the sensation as his thoughts are sped up by Brain Rush's powers. "The first thing you feel is a pressure on your chest. It's like you're breathing water, but without the panic due to lack of oxygen. Then you try to walk and your legs lag with everything that your brain is telling them. It's only when you realize that your body's moving at the normal rate and your mind is sped up that you can begin to compensate. Most people can't figure out that first step and they stand there like idiots, twitching and gibbering nonsense. It's not your muscles that will break through the molasses but your own intellect."

Luck

  • Power: Lucky

For a period of five years, Brain Rush and Charlie Horse swept through Khazan's criminal underground, putting wrongdoers in jail with their combination of skills. Many times, the duo were saved by pure chance. We all remember the time when Median had captured the two superheroes and televised their intended execution. A faulty link in one of Charlie Horse's chains was all that was needed to swing them to safety and defeat Median's minions. Their very names, so similar to the powers for which their personae were named, testify to the fact that they, like many other superheroes, have that elusive quality known as luck. But even luck couldn't have stopped the explosion that claimed Charlie Horse's legs. When the KPD asked for Brain Rush's help he almost didn't do it, afraid that what had happened to his sidekick would some day happen to him. But the urge to do good was stronger than his fear.

"And now we will look into the events that led up to the temporary braindeath of Khazan's chief of police and the subsequent two-month stay in Khazan Asylum. We will delve into the demons that plagued this man's mind and how he--" *click* Ross knew that the show was a steaming pile of bull. The moment he lost his mind, his publicist became the sole holder of the Brain Rush image. She could keep it for all he cared. He's just Dr. Ross Bryant now. But what happened to the Chief was not appropriate. For an entire day, he was frozen in place, his mind going at glacial speeds. No matter how bad your week has been, putting your boss in a coma because your coffee has too much cream is just going too far. The time after that moment was a blur that ended a week after being admitted into the asylum. He still didn't know how they managed to get him to bring the Chief back to normal. Maybe it was best that he didn't know. It could bring on more problems than it resolves.

Be persistent

It was only two months in that asylum. His experience there actually lasted years. Most of Ross's time was spent delving into himself. He had sped up his own mind so that he could look at everything that made him break apart. He had forced himself to remember every unpleasant event that happened during his career. Nobody knew a fraction of what he had gone through within himself, including the damn tabloid he was watching. But his will got him through to the end. From the very first time he had to take a life to when-- Suddenly, he realized what time it was. Ross stood up and left the break room so that he could get back to work in his office.

Negotiation

"Hello, Scarlet Fervor, I'm sorry to keep you waiting. Since this is your first session with me, I'll answer some of your questions before we start the treatment." Scarlet looked nervous. Ross just looked back calmly and asked what was on his mind. "Look, Dr. Ross, I know you're a trained psychiatrist and all, but I've been hearing some bad stuff about you lately. They say you were once an inmate in an asylum." "I was. It took me some time, but I healed my mind there. It was at the asylum that I discovered the treatment that has helped many patients before you." "You figured this all out when you were crazy? I don't think I want to do this." "The treatment managed to fix me up. And I did manage to become a fully accredited psychiatrist after I was rehabilitated. It's not exactly the kind of job that a schizophrenic would find easy to get into." Scarlet Fervor relaxed a little. He got through to the young superhero. Ross still had his old skills as a negotiator, he was sure. They were just applied a little bit differently now.

Speaking

"Lie down, Mr. Fervor. You've heard Gladice tell you how this works. You won't have to concentrate on your balance this way. Now I'll speed up your mind. Mine will speed up also, to the exact same rate. Don't try to speak. Your body won't be able to keep up and I've seen men dislocate their jaws trying to talk. Instead, imagine how it feels when you talk, with your lips pushing against each other and your tongue hitting your palate and your teeth. Try to do this now." "Can you hear me now?" ...a telepathic nod... "Good." "This first session will mostly involve training your mind to function at an increased speed. If we have some time, we can speed you up further and look into some of your memories. Let's continue now..."

The heart of the matter

When the treatment was over, Scarlet Fervor's entire body twitched and he jumped up. "I gotta get going! It feels like we've been at it for days!" "There are still fifteen minutes left in our session, Scarlet. We were only doing it for half an hour. And I'd like us to discuss some of the things we saw together." Scarlet looked up at the wall clock. It was still the same day. "Hit me." "I noticed that you were preoccupied with your brother, Yellow. Do you consider him a threat?" "He once made a deal with our arch-nemesis, Annie Biotic. A week after that, Squidge, that was our sidekick, got in an accident. I just don't trust him anymore." "What were you doing when Squidge's accident happened?" "Crap, I really gotta go now! Stuff to do!" Ross had hit on something and it was just the first session. Yellow Fervor probably had nothing to do with Squidge's accident. Blame had simply been transferred over. Ross opened his door, long after Scarlet left. "Gladice, could you give Mr. Fervor a call in a couple days to set up another appointment? And be sure to tell me when Snakeman gets here. We've really made some progress last week."
