You want to know about the past, do you?

Yeah, I don't blame you. For the last year or so, everyone seems to care about it, what formed the Nexus, how we all came to be, the heroes and villains who started it all. Most tales are adventurous, full of battles, conflicts, glory. Not this one. Not even for a second. But it may be the greatest story of them all.

You've heard that line before, huh? Really? And here I thought I hit upon a new idea. Damn shame.

Anyways, we start at the beginning of the Nexus, or so the story goes. Yes, the Nexus had a beginning, at least in this legend. No one's really sure; hell, there's gotta be 50 different versions of the way it happened. Well, there were no Sentinels, no Reavers, no Syndicate, no Fallen, no sectors, and no plan. It was anarchy. People from all kinds of timestreams just duking it out trying to establish themselves as the authority.

Then he walked in. Never told them his name, the legend tellers just gave him one. Never lifted a hand in anger. Never asked for anything. He just walked into the middle of a gang war, and he sat right down. Everyone stopped; it was like the proverbial elephant in the room, man. You HAD to wonder what the hell he was thinking. The two leaders walked up to him, guns in hand, and he just kept smiling a stupid grin right back at them. When they finally got close enough, he looked at them questioningly and asked something that we've all tried to define since: "Why do you fight?"

Personality: Oh, he was frail looking all right. Everyone knew that. He never fought back, and I don't think he could have fought back if he wanted. But it never seemed to be his goal. He just wanted to talk, to understand, and to guide. While the rest of the Nexus was on personal power quests, this guy walked around questioning morality.

He nearly died countless times; some guy'd take a potshot, and he'd sit there, a bullet in his arm, smiling, just asking why the guy would do that.

...unless he was standing. Then he'd stand and do the same thing...you get the point.

People didn't know if he was a sage or a psycho. But they knew he was fascinating, and that alone was unifying people.

Listen...

Now, you gotta realize, when everything was forming, no one, and I mean no one, wanted to get short-changed. Everyone wanted power. Everyone, even the most upright hero, would kill to succeed. Except this guy.

He actually refused money and power from several people who started to love his ideas, or his questionings, or whatever.

He just wanted to listen. Not talk. He never lectured. He'd counter a point to show its problems, but he never lectured. You talked to him.

He just seemed to understand everyone. A bloodthirsty serial killer could charge him, knife in hand, and end up spending three hours trying to explain why he kills. Because this guy...he knew. Or at least, everyone thought he knew. He understood you and what you felt. So people'd just talk to him.

Talking to him was just the first step. I know I said he didn't preach, because he didn't. But he would challenge anything you said that didn't make sense to him. Just question whatever it is you were doing.

Best people could see it, the guy abhorred violence. Even more, he didn't get it. He didn't understand why these people would waste so much time hurting each other, and when their explanations were inadequate, he'd challenge it. And no one could ever answer him well.

Before long, they could see, no, feel why he was right. It was like their own inner conscience finally opening up. Time after time, the people who tried to kill him became disciples of his. Well, not really, he never aimed to have disciples or told them to follow him, but you get the idea. Legend has it that a few "good natured" super powered types that took talks with him pretty seriously started the Sentinels. Some say the Reavers and the Syndicate both formed after going to him because of an agreed-upon code of ethics that was kind of a compromise just to avoid more in-fighting. A few claim the Fallen infrastructure took cues from what he said to avoid internal strife. The sectors may have been caused by large groups of people wanting a peaceful community in line with him.

Of course, most of that's not true; we know how the Reavers and Sentinels formed, and he wasn't involved, and the Syndicate's a stretch, not to mention the Fallen. But you get the idea. People believed in him so much that they added him to old stories in hopes of making a better point. Real or not, he's kind of like that part in all of us that questions our violent acts, a conscience that would listen but never reprimand.

And, hell, isn't that what we needed to form this city in the first place?

Now, as I said, there's a lot of stories about his life. But, man, if you could hear the stories about his death. See, some people say he never died and that he's a spirit or something. Some say he is reincarnated whenever he is needed most. And some just say he died like everyone else.

Worse, no one agrees how he died. Some say he finally got killed in a debate. Some say he let himself die because he accomplished his goal. Still others say it was natural causes or cancer or something.

But almost all stories talk about one incident. See, it was after he had a following, and a disciple or whatever asked him what he wanted to be remembered for. He responded, and the response is always as follows:

"Nothing. I will be remembered best if not at all. My meager output of words is not something that garners me pride. It is merely the thoughts of an old and tired man. My only wish is that some of my ideas, those that happen to be worthwhile, will spread from me and become the ideas of others. When they no longer talk of my crusade but instead of their crusade, then may I say my life showed worth."

That phrase is quoted often enough that I've heard scholars say it's probably the only for sure direct quote. But it fits everything else. All he wanted was to change enough people's hearts that someone would take up the cause as their own. Well, right now, there are at least 40 religions and monastic traditions that claim his teachings. Further, the countless peacekeeping and mediating groups that try to resolve the conflicts in Khazan with peaceful means, obviously, serve a similar purpose. In a way, his words have been repeated so many times to so many people that a good number of the population has bought it completely; it's as if Paix were still around, guiding.

Guess he got his wish.
