Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to this bending extravaganza! I'm Shiro Shinobi, and I will be covering this extraordinary event for this evening.

Shiro_Shinobi.png

We are live at the final event of this year's Pro-Bending Championship Tournament. But this is no ordinary championship match, folks! Oh, no! For this final will feature some very special participants!

In the red corner, we have the champions of last year's tournament, the Future Industries Fire Ferrets!

Fire_Ferrets.png

This fiery team was named last year's champion due to the forfeiture of the title by the winners of last year's final, the White Falls Wolfbats. But having fought to the championship round both last year and now this year, the Fire Ferrets are definitely no slouches themselves, folks! By now, you may be familiar with these dynamic youngsters. The Fire Ferret are comprised of the fabulous bending brothers, Mako and Bolin, and the Avatar herself, Korra!

And in the blue corner, we have quite some legendary competitors, ladies and gentlemen! They were a major factor in ending the Hundred-Year War some seventy years ago, and through the miracles of modern and spiritual medicine, they have been brought back both to their youth, and in one member's case, from the dead!  They are Katara, Toph Beifong, and the former Fire Lord himself, Zuko, the original Team Avatar!

avatar_reference.jpg

They were a surprise entry in this year's tourney in every sense of the word, and they too have fought their way all the way to the finals. I can hardly believe I'm calling this once-in-a-lifetime battle myself, folks! This will truly be a clash of epic proportions!

Okay, here the deal: The Legend of Korra's Team Avatar or, more specifically, the Fire Ferrets, which are composed of Korra, Mako, and Bolin, are in a championship pro-bending match against the original Team Avatar, which in this case (and according to pro-bending rules) is composed of Katara, Toph, and Zuko. For the purposes of this match, Toph, Katara, and Zuko are aged to 16, 18, and 20 years old, respectively.

This is the championship arena:

And finally, for those not in the know, here are the rules of pro-bending:

In a straight up fight, I'd have to go with the original team avatar. But in a pro bending match, I'm not sure who the victor is.

Yeah, in a straight up fight, Toph pretty much Solos.  But, because of Pro Bending, Zuko's going to be the strength because of his natural style.

Nick.com is Nickelodeon's official website. If your service can access Netflix, you can surely get to Nick.com, right?

I'm not so certain the originals would win in a straight up fight given that the other team actually has an Avatar, but if Korra were still restricted to waterbending I'd say the new guys lose.

However in the given scenario it's going to depend a lot on how much practice and/or how familiar the originals are with the sport. Remember Korra's first match? I picture the originals committing a lot of fouls mainly because they're not used to fighting with rules.

Yeah, in a straight up fight, Toph pretty much Solos.

While Toph's indeed a great earthbender, I think her abilities have been a bit overrated by Avatar fans. Even with her heightened senses and seismic sense, her blindness can still be taken advantage of to a point. It could be argued that a big reason that Toph has never really been hurt in battle is because of plot armor. Think about it: a blind, twelve-year old girl is never going to get knocked around much in an American cartoon.

The original Team Avatar's probably had at least a fair amount of practice at this point, since they've made it all the way to the finals in this match-up.

Just saw the first episode. Korra's good; aggressive and versatile. She took care of the Triad benders with very little effort. I'd guess she'd give any of the benders on the other team a rough time. I haven't seen her teammates yet.

Agreed. Toph's unique abilities are ideal when facing other earthbenders but should be more vulnerable to other styles(particularly firebending and airbending).

Good point, I hadn't thought of that.

Still though, given Toph's blindness and Zuko's frequent hotheadedness I think the Fire Ferrets have the edge.

And they gave a villain Schizophrenia (Seriously, Azula shows all the signs) but yeah.  Some days I do question it.  However, These guys are more sports-combat focused.  It's not saying that their not good, but... here, this video from HSDK should help my point:

In short, their fighting is based more off of rules and regulations than wars that are essentially nothing but street fights once a battle begin.  Toph's skill would probably be too much for the new hot headed Avatar.

I doubt that the new crew knows how to redirect lighting, even though one of them can shoot the stuff.  (Names escape me as I've just got my gf into Avatar and she hates Korra.)

Now I almost wish I had made this a full-blown match. The idea of adding Iroh as a co-commentator even came to mind after the fact. :( Thing is, we don't know how long matches are going to stay open now.

The sports combat focus really is the point of this match-up. If Toph doesn't want to get disqualified, she won't be doing any special techniques or much other sneaky moves.

That would be Mako that's the lightning-bender, and he also redirected a lightning-type attack in a pretty creative way, That's beyond the point, though, as special bending techniques aren't allowed in the pro-bending tourney.

I've seen three episodes so far and it looks like the sport uses really basic attacks. It's a lot more about strategy than power. That could make things hard for Toph and definitely Zuko. I don't think a virtuoso attack from any o fthe players is going to stand up to good teamwork form the other side. Team Avatar (with the exception of Katara) aren't great team players.

It's interesting. The contrast between the deep stances of the traditional bending styles and the more fluid on-your-toes of pro-bending reminds me a lot of Bruce Lee talking about the rigidity of traditional kung fu.

Yes, I know.  I was commenting on a previous post about had this been a full out battle.

Okay, not that I've seen five episodes (all that's available on the Nick site :( ) I'm ready to shoot my mouth off.

Katara vs. Korra - IMO, Korra probably has more raw power than Katara and also has a more aggressive personality. Korra is more of a go-getter and more self-centered while Katara is very much a protector and nurtrer. (That's not saying Katara isn't a good fighter or that Korra can't be tender, this is just the general way their personalities push them.) Despite Korra's greater aptitude, Katara is probably the more skilled water-bender. That doesn't make that much difference here because the skills used in pro-bending are pretty basic and the rules won't let you get too fancy. On balance, I'd guess Korra's the stronger player.

Toph vs. Bolin - Bolin is very good but I think Toph is stronger, faster, and much more aggressive.

Zuko vs. Mako - I think these two are very close in strength, skill and aggressiveness. In a fight, I'd expect Zuko to be more ruthless and to have a small advantage. In pro-bending, I think Mako will have a slight edge in skill.

Teamwork - When they aren't distracted by teen drama, the Fire Ferrets work very well together, and Mako is a talented captain. I dunno who the captain of the of Team Avatar is but I'm guessing Zuko. He's got a bigger ego and more trust issues than Mako anf that's going to hurt. Katara is a team player but Toph has a bit of an ego and there's likely to be friction on the team. Then there is Toph's blindness. While she has an uncanny sense of where everything and everyone is, she cannot read her teammates body language or communicate with them any way other than verbally.

I'd say, in the end, this comes down to a group of highly talented individuals vs. a well-oiled team.

Fire Ferrets win.

Heh, you know, this being a rumble, I hadn't thought that far ahead about who'd be Team Avatar's captain. The original Team Avatar was often lead by committee. But yeah, fortunately and unfortunately, Zuko's probably the logical choice here.
