I've been listening to a lot of rap lately, figured I'd start a topic so people can share their favorites. Rule #1: There will be no mention of Soulja Boy in this thread... Please...

Anyway, Eminem is still #1 for me to be honest. People say he sold out or whatever after becoming mainstream but I don't see it. Close second to Slim is Brother Ali. He's semi-underground but he's pretty damn talented. Some others I really enjoy are Tech N9ne, Apathy, Hopsin, Haystak, Royce Da 5'9 and Tupac.

Eminem is my number 2. I really hate rap, but his stuff always sounded good, which still surprises me. But recently, Macklemore took that spot, purely because of this song.

For me, old school rap is where it's at.. I'm talking 80s to mid 90's Rap...

For example:

Macklemore's pretty entertaining. Doubt he'd be much good at freestyling but I like his prewritten stuff. Haven't seen any Public Enemy aside from that video but they seem good.

Haystak's best song, imo:

I'm really entertained by Thrift Shop, but Same Love has some real meaning to it, and based on the rap I usually hear that's unique.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention Nas. Also, I can't get enough of Eminem and Royce collaborating. S'funny watching them try to outdo each other. Glad they aren't feuding any more.

Eminem, Childish, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (They have to be mentioned together. Ryan Lewis is way way way way way way too good to not get mentioned). NWA's got some sweet stuff. Hopsin has one song I like. Golf Wang has a few songs that are worth a listen every now and then. Chiddy Bang's "Opposite of Adults" is an awesome song too.

No specific order: Brother Ali,  Eminem, Talib Kweli, Grieves Macklemore and Ryan, Aesop Rock, Mos Def, Grives, Eligh, P.O.S, Jay-z Snoop *sigh* Lion, Nas.

In my opinion most of the best rappers are far from being mainstream.

In no particular order:

Sinik(french rapper)

Joker, L.O.C., Malk De Koijn, and original(first two albums) MC Clemens(danish rappers).

Eminem, Tupa.

There's quite a few more, but I can't remember their names.  Might post more when/if I remember them.

Oh, this song deserves mentioning, even if the rapper himself is not exactly a top lister.

I think Hopsin's pretty good, I just hate it when people confuse stupid conspiracy theories with actual depth on some of his songs. Tech N9ne seems average to me. I really like Eminem, didn't like Recovery though. I don't think I would be able to compile a list of my favorite rappers, I like them all on a different basis.

Eminem is hands down my favorite and I think he is GOAT

I didn't see anyone say Lil Wayne, which is weird, I don't understand how anyone can hate on him to be honest. Anyone feels like getting into that debate, let me know.

Biggie and Tupac no doubt are so amazing and they were so far ahead of their time.

Well I'm from Pittsburgh so I have to show love to the Pittsburgh rappers who are actually mainstream right now and that's Wiz and Mac Miller.

I've met Wiz a couple of times, our company does a lot of shit at his new house. He is really cool and momma is cooler.

YOU ALL MUST LISTEN TO THIS!!! IT'S PRETTY FUCKING HARD IMO

Another rapper I used to love is Shyne, it's a shame that he took the heat for Diddy and had to do 10 years for him... His verse with the old school rappers on a track on the Carter IV is just disgusting.

There is so much more to this discussion and I look foward to it.

Shyne's one I like quite a bit. I own Godfather Buried Alive and my dad has a couple of his mixtapes.

Anyone else ever listen to Immortal Technique? This guy's awesome.

Warning, this rap turns dark and twisted as *vulgarity* near the end.

Heard this song hangin out with some old friends, never knew who it was, but yeah it definitely makes you a tad uncomfortable towards the end.
