Okay, what year is it in the current Marvel/ D.C. / any continuity right now? Do we even know? If some one could make a time line of in universe events (i.e. Krypton blowing up - superman's first appearance as a hero) that would help too, I think.

Spider Man meets the President...Obama. I'm sure that can point you in a good direction, Marvel wise.

Obama's president in DC too. Honestly, time doesn't flow the same way in comic books as it does here. Certain characters age and mature, though never in real time (Peter Parker), while others remain the same (Frank Castle looks like he's in his early 30s, but he should be in his sixties-- though I think this was explained after the whole Frankencastle thing, his body was fully rejuvenated to its prime or something).

A coherent timeline is a pain. I was reading one of the Essential Avengers (Vol 3 IIRC) and there were solid references to 1967. Superman once met people imitating JFK and Kruschev. What do you do when you have a character who appears to be 25 in a story where Nixon is President and 30 in a story where Obama is President?

You can build a real world timeline for a comic character, but you have to decide which topical references to accept and which to accept. You also have to accept that, in only a few years, your timeline will be wrong again.

The best rule of thumb I've seen to help understand this is that for every 6 years that pass in the real world, 1 year passes in the Marvel Universe. DC is probably pretty similar. I did come checking with the amount of time it took Peter Parker to finish high school, go through college, etc. and it seems to work pretty well.

Based on that...
Spiderman is almost 25 years old and has been fighting crime for 8.7 years.
Kitty Pryde (13 when she joined the X-Men) would now be almost 19.
Batman (assuming he was 26 when he started fighting crime) would be 38
Robin (Dick Grayson) would be 24 (assuming an initial age of 12)
Robin (Tim Drake) would be 18 (assuming an initial age of 14)
etc.

So, I'm guessing the answer is no unless the word of god has spoken but, could we relatively align certain events in the universes? like Clark landing on earth in relation to Bruce's parents being shot? Or the forming of the X-Men in relation to when the Avengers first assembled? stuff like that?

That's my best take. Using this formula you can say that Superman became active 12.5 years ago and the rocket landed about 24 years before that. You just can't assign a solid date to that because it's going to keep changing.

But some of that goes out the window with the new 52 which has condensed everthing into a ten year period.
Which makes some things like Batmans timeline confusing. Bruce started crime fighting at 23 and assuming he was on his own for at least a couple of years he found Dick age 9 who then grew to age 24 while quitting and being repalced by Jason who died and only resurfaced years later.

Writers should probably not worry so much about references becoming dated. It will always happen and usually people won't care that much if they keep it light.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is all just part of what we call retroactive continuity.

Dinsdale, how in hell have you already got over 700 posts? I've been here for what, about maybe two years, and you've only been here a few months, I believe? How do you do it?
