I know it's supposed to be really good, but can anyone rate it for me?

Story: 4 stars (out of 5)

It's a pretty solid premise. Without spoiling anything it manages to examine what it would be like for Bruce to come out of retirement as an older and more bitter Batman, and also looks at how the world would change without a Batman in it. It's different from lots of Batman stories because it isn't him vs a single main rival and he instead fights various antagonists, some with more relevancy than others, but the true opponent isn't who you expect at first. The conclusion is very climactic, if a tad shoehorned into the last few issues.

There is a lot of examination of the Batman Psyche and Miller's first person narrative is beautiful at setting the action scenes as well as getting inside Bruce's mind. However there are some downsides, IMO. First off it was made in the 80's and suffers some faults for not aging well because of that as the Batman is in that 'near-psychopathic' phase he suffered during that time. There's also some commentary about Reagan and political jingoism of the decade that comes off as grating in 2012.

Art direction 3.5 stars

Much like Year One, the story is often good in spite of the art simplicity. Though don't get me wrong, there are some awesome panels where the Batman comes off as a hulking night terror. But there also scenes where exposition is explained through the TV news and talk shows. While this device works in a TV show, in a comic medium it slows the story a bit and the panels show people who appear to be suffering from botox injections. Also its the 80's, so be prepared for ridiculous fashions and big hair. I liked it overall but there were some unnecessary panels that were rushed.

Overall 4.0
I'd get it.

I didn't like it. I thought it was boring for the most part. I don't think I ever finished it though, so if something really cool happens in like the last part, it might be worth checking out.

I thought it was pretty bad, to be honest. The artwork was ugly, and the story was all over the place.

Mordecai Richler of the The New York Times concluded, "If this book is meant for kids, I doubt that they will be pleased.

However...

Writer Matthew K. Manning in the "1980s" chapter of DC Comics Year By Year A Visual Chronicle (2010) calls the series "arguably the best Batman story of all time.

Only one way to find out.

I kinda hated how Superman was portrayed in that book. It was a good story but a bit overrated. The best Batman story of all time? Yea I don't think so. The movie was very good and well made. I give it a 9 out of 10.

the movie's coming out in 2 parts, only part 1 is out so far, so we'll have to see how it handles the second half of the story

I really liked the movie. I like the dark twist they put on it. That's definitely how Batman should be portrayed. I can't wait for the second part.
