I hadn’t been reinstated yet, despite the fact that I had saved the city once again. I did get a parade though. I got to sit on a float for the day and force a smile while signing anything that was pushed my way. To put it nicely it wasn’t my cup of tea. If they wanted to thank me, reinstating me would have been more than suffice, but no, I find myself once again in the waiting room to see Dr. Wimble. I sank into the plush white couch until the secretary motioned to me that I could go in.
“So, I heard about your parade. A real heroic thing that you did there, Caitlin, sacrificing yourself for those people.” He said beaming at me from his seat.
“It wasn’t for them.” I said plainly, not looking directly at the doctor.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, it was for them, but I like to think it was for me too.”
“How so?” Dr. Wimble said, leaning forward.
“It reminded me that no matter what happens to my abilities, I’m still a hero.”
“That much is true.”
The rest of the session went well. We actually talked. I’m starting not to mind these. I feel so much better after, so relaxed.
The smell of sweat and feet circulated through the Sentinel gym. Despite the tainted smell, I had made a habit of practicing yoga here. It was relaxing too and it helped with my back a lot. As I sat, my legs crossed and breathing slowly, I could hear the footsteps approaching from behind me. Then came the tap on my shoulder.
“Are you ready?”
“As ready as I’ll ever be.”
It was Kabuki. She had been assigned to be my sparring partner. She was a tough bitch. If you couldn’t tell from her callous face expressions you would soon find out if you got on her bad side.
“We won’t go too hard. Let’s ease you back into this.”
“I’ve got a better idea, actually. A deal kinda.” I said, somewhat unsure of myself.
“Hmm?”
“If I win the match, you’ll report that I’m in fine enough shape to be reinstated. If I lose, then we can ease along as slow as you want.”
She pursed her lips as she contemplated the offer, but still her blank features were discouraging.
“Alright, a deal, but don’t expect me to hold back in the least.”
Her statement was somehow friendly and threatening at the same time. The gym suddenly got eerily quiet as even the sound of the air conditioning seemed subdued by the tension.
We took our sides of the mat.
I had to win. I have to be... undefeatable.
