Think of how horribly the X Men would have defeated Loki. Supposedly the Avengers are supposed to be > the X Men...
Bottom line: Loki is comic relief at best, he needs to be summoning demons, turning the members against each other with illusions *IN BATTLE* and generally being more awesome and worthy of a challenge.

Are you talking comic or movie wise?
Movie wise.

Uhh yes!No. Just no.
Captain America damn near soloed him... That is a poor showing for a 'God', to say the absolute least.

i have been saying this for years i hate the thor wins because he is a god arguement. Why do people throw about the word "god" as if it actually means something? From the movie setting of Marvel they are just called "gods" because it looks like they influenced early mankind, but it's not like they are immortal or all powerful, they are simply above human ability and wielded technology that looked susupiciously like magic.

Asgardians(and Frost Giants) are, on average, at 20+ tons of strength.

Cap did not nearly solo him anywhere in the movie.

He's a dangerous and cunning man... who just happened to accidentally go up against a team he wasn't prepared to handle. That was the whole point of Stark's threat to him. He missed off a group of superheroes and in the end they'd come for him, there was no scenario where he would sit on a throne and everything would be fine. He'd lose, it was guaranteed.

Like the New Gods of DC. I guess Loki is supposed to be in the same level as Orion, Barda or Lightray.

Hopefully Thanos will be an actual challenge. Then again, this Avengers team isn't their heartiest incarnation.

He was made threatening enough to cause SHIELD to call upon them. However story wise he (and his non nondescript totally lame alien army) were made bland so the focus was on the Avengers. To me the story was designed very much like the Star Trek reboot (oddly both written by people who have mostly been involved in TV, Joss Whedon and JJ Abrams respectively.) The villain exists but is ultimately not made to be terribly interesting nor terribly difficult to defeat. Why? Because this is the first movie about a group dynamic and what's more gripping is seeing "the band come together" and them working out their group dynamic. The main attraction is seeing the Avengers work together, bicker, banter and interact, not in seeing them overcome Loki per se.

C'mon he was beaten by Thor alone..
It's funny, my brother had this complaint before the movie was even released: how Loki get's beaten by Thor so he can't be a threat to all of the Avengers together.
And yet as an alternative he suggested the Red Skull...
