BATMAN/GARGOYLES CROSSOVER Part XXVI



Summary: With all the inmates freed from Arkham Asylum, Batman had more than he could he handle. Even with the help of his usual allies like Robin and Nightwing, the Dark Knight was overwhelmed. Alfred sought out a new ally, David Xanatos, who has come forth ready to offer a helping hand along with the Manhattan Gargoyle Clan.

Previously: In Part XIX, Thailog battled Robin outside of the Iceberg Lounge. In Part XXI, Elisa Maza and Harvey Bullock debated on how the Gotham City Police should handle the issue of Demona. And in Part XVII, Poison Ivy revealed to Coldstone her plan to build a brain washed army with the help of the Mad Hatter.



Outside the Iceberg Lounge, Thailog laid bound and unconcious at the feet of Robin. Tim clutched his bleeding chest and limped over to a nearby light pole for support.

“A most impressive preformance, Robin,” The Penguin commented. “Surely I could have made a fortune charging admission for such a show.”

Robin glared at him. “Were you involved in this, Cobblepot?”

“No. I give you my word. I was informed that a gargoyle wanted a meeting with me and came out to this surprising carnage. I’m just happy you two didn’t tussle inside my club. That wouldn’t be good for business.”

Robin continued to glare.

“I’m sure Batman must be on the way with you in such a perilous position... unless of course he is too occupied elsewhere with Arkham’s most dangerous criminals running amok,” said the Penguin.

Robin did not answer.

The Penguin smiled. “I see. Well, as an act of good faith I will call an ambulance for you myself and even arrange a police escort.”

The Penguin left Robin and Thailog and re-entered his club. He quickly dialed a number on his cell phone. “Ivy darling, how are you? Are you still looking for some new recruits for your army experiment.. Good because I’ve got two great candidates for you right outside my doors. One is a gargoyle and one is the Boy Wonder himself, Robin. They just had an intense fight outside the club and considering the size and strength of the gargoyle, I’m amazed the kid survived much less won the fight. I guess that’s where the Boy Wonder gets his name. Anyway, the point is that in their current conditions they would be very open for your particular recruitment technique should you be interested.”


Elsewhere, Detectives Elisa Maza and Harvey Bullock awaited a decision from Commissioner Gordon in his office. After considering the options in his head, Commissioner Gordon turned to Elisa. “I understand your concern, Detective, but I can’t let a threat like this just roam free. Especially not at a time like this. I have faith in my police department, you should too. If you say the female gargoyle is acting alone then we will focus our efforts only on her, I give you my word.”

A dejected expression spread across the face of Elisa.

A uniformed officer bursted into the Commissioner’s office.

“Sorry to interrupt sir, but we just got news of a major scuffle outside of the Iceberg Lounge. It appears to have been a fight between Robin and one of them gargoyles that people have been seeing all night. Robin won, but he is hurt pretty bad.”

Commissioner Gordon sighed. “How awful.” He gazed down sadly at his desk.

“Working on her own, huh?” said Detective Bullock with mock tone. “I knew we couldn’t trust those monsters. What do you have to say about your friends now?” Bullock turned toward Elisa, but she was gone. “Hey, where did she go?”

“I’m worried she hasn’t been completely honest with us,” said Gordon. “Find her quickly. Don’t let her leave this building.”

Elisa made haste the instant she heard the words about Robin come out of the officer’s mouth. It could not be true. The Manhattan Clan would never pick a fight with one of the protectors of Gotham City. Elisa knew she wouldn’t be able to help her friends from the office of the Commissioner. They definitely won’t listen to her now. She quickly ran out into the street as people began to shout behind her.

Outside the door she heard a gun cock behind her head. Elisa looked over her shoulder and into the determined eyes of Detective Renee Montoya.

“I don’t want to do this, Elisa, but I have been told I can’t let you leave,” said Renee. She lifted her walkie. “Don‘t worry Harvey, I‘ve got her.” She put the walkie back down. “What is going on?”

“You have to let me go. I have to go now. My friends are being set up, they need my help,” replied Elisa.

“Your friends? Those gargoyle creatures?”

“Yes. And despite what you may have heard one of them did not attack Robin, I’m sure of it,” said Elisa.

“How sure?” Renee asked.

The two female detective stared intently at one another.

“I was going to go pick up Robin’s attacker myself before they radioed me to stop you. Come with me, and we shall see for ourselves what really happened. I’m probably going to get in a lot of trouble for this but you saved my butt tonight when we were tracking down Zsasz so I owe you that much,” explained Renee.

Elisa made a motion to follow Detective Montoya before Renee lifted her hand to stop her.

“First though I’m going to need your piece,” said Renee. “I owe you, but I don’t know if I trust you right now.”

Elisa snorted dismissively.

“I don’t think you have much of a choice here, Elisa. They are going to be out here soon and probably won’t be as courteous as I am.”

Elisa reluctantly handed over her gun to Detective Montoya.


In the car, Elisa remained quiet and stared out the passenger side window into the night sky. Renee studied her for a moment. “You may not believe me, but I’m hoping that you are right. Everything you told me about the Gargoyle Can earlier tonight, I want that to be true, because they sounded great.”

“They are,” whispered Elisa.

They pulled up outside the Iceberg Lounge. The two women stayed in the car as they looked around for Robin. It took them a minute before they saw the ambulance down the street.

“There he is,” said Renee. “And that sure looks like a gargoyle tied up by the tree.”

Elisa’s eyes widened. At first she thought it was Goliath, until the white hair gave away his true identity. “That is no gargoyle. Well, he is, but actually he is a clone. It’s a long story, but that is not one of the Manhattan Clan that I have been telling you about. He is bad news, but I don’t know what he is doing in Gotham. He must have come with Demona.”

“You’ll have plenty of time to explain when...” Detective Montoya stopped mid sentence when two familiar faces darted across the street toward the ambulance.

In the back of the ambulance, medics quickly tended to some of Robin’s injuries. As they wrapped gauze around his ribs, shots were fired and the medics fell dead.

Robin leapt off his gurney and flipped it at the shooter, KGBeast, the Soviet assassin. He then tackled KGBeast out of the ambulance. Before he could make another move, the Mad Hatter grabbed Robin and jammed a needle in his neck.

Renee grabbed the car radio. “Attention all units! Attention all units! This is Detective Renee Montoya. I need back-up at the Iceberg Lounge immediately. The Mad Hatter and KGBeast have been spotted and they are attempting to kidnap Robin, over!"

“Understood. Do not engage until help arrives.”

After throwing Robin back into the ambulance, KGBeast and the Mad Hatter together lifted Thailog and with some effort deposited him in the back as well.

“We are not just going to just sit and watch them leave, are we?” asked Elisa.

Renee grabbed the steering wheel. “No!” Renee reached in her pocket and handed Elisa’s gun back to her. “But, if we are going to do this we are going to need some of that slick shooting I saw back at Zsasz’s hideout.”

Good set-up, JohnnyChany.

Maza and Montoya working together? Heh, wouldn't be the first time in a CBUB match. They would make a very good team, but I don't think they can handle KGBeast, who's given Batman a hard time and even beaten him once or twice.

Hatter would do best to either stay out of this one or provide somewhat of a distraction to the ladies. Once it's all said and done, though, with his mind control tech he'd have a couple of pretty handy henchwomen.
