Verthandi didn't understand most of the Proto-Scandinavian spewing forth from the not-at-all-dead Barbarian standing before her. Something about "rendering" and "daring to defile." But she didn't need to understand every word to get the gist of her situation.
Despite what scholars claimed, those poems she quickly skimmed weren't written in the last few days of Maks' life. Not only did that ancient ruler slay dragons with his own bare hands, apparently he defied death itself. Verthandi found the untouched tomb no one else was able to find, but it was untouched only because Maks was never laid to rest within it. Instead, she found the very Barbarian sitting upon a throne in an airtight chamber long unexposed to the outside world. Maybe he had been sealed away by frightened followers who refused to live eternally under a ruler so clearly their superior, or perhaps he sealed himself away in a fit of eternal madness.
Either way, if Verthandi wanted to obtain the Barbarian's mad skills, she was going to have to do what Death itself couldn't.
