OK, I'll go first. An outrageous, shameless question, showing how little I've paid attention.

If I'm completely new here and want to create my first character at the FPL, where do I start? What are the ground rules? Is there some source material or background information I should go through first, or should I just write about someone, somewhere, with something going on in his/her/its life, doing something? Can I just concentrate on the character now and worry about how he'll do in any possible confrontations later?

And finally, where should I post it for feedback?

Ground rules are fairly basic as far as you'd expect for a creative writing site; don't claim your powers can do more than you've bought points for (no buying a standard-level Fire power and then claiming you can throw the sun at your enemies), nothing that goes out of its way to be stupidly obscene, nothing copyrighted or blatantly ripped off.

There's a fair amount of collected backstory people have written, but it's not necessary to be based on it unless you want your character to be related to it. The majority of FPL characters have absolutely nothing to do with each other, and aren't necessarily even based on the same planet. Some degree of "official" setting is being worked on, but is incomplete, so I can't tell you anything there. Just write whatever you want.

Feel free to worry about writing it first. Voting in the FPL is based more on quality of writing and originality of character than on chosen power set, so spending time on the character can't hurt you. When it's done, or at least done enough to read, you can post it in the FPL Character Analysis section for review.

Thanks. I vaguely remember reading about the point system on another thread, but that's about it.

According to the FPL layout, it says 12000 characters. Does that mean the characters like letters or words?

So, I'm looking at the FPL Wiki and I'm thinking to myself..."Self"...cuz that's what I calls myself. I says "Self, has Rhekarid ever made a good guy character?" Jury is still out.

Several. At the very least, several who were submitted to hero teams. Whether they qualify as "good" is up for grabs.

Didn't really think that this required a whole topic, so I put it here. If a character can make fake (i.e. no substance) copies of himself, does that fall under Illusion or duplication?

If the copies can't DO anything, just look like something, they'd be illusions. Duplicates are physical copies that can, at the very least, punch someone in the face.

I just switched two of mine like that, there's no oversight in public teams so you can move them instantly

The Public Teams (Solo's, Angels of Mercy, SLJ, Fallen, and Syndicate) are all Open. You can hop around in them as much as you want.

The Private Teams (One's created by other creators) you have to ask to be in via the Teams page.

I meant actually in character though. I know I can make an angel of mercy, but I want to know how to describe how he joined

THAT is not a process that is particularly covered at this time. It is plausible that they are 'invited' by some cloak-and-daggers means after having been witnessed acting in a manner that the Angels would approve of. However no two people would likely be 'invited' in the same manner.
