I know it's random, but didn't want this to get lost in the 'general' anime thread. I think its a little strange that all the amazing and memorable anime series that capture your hearts are usually 26 episodes long. So I want to know what you guys have to think about this. And while we're at it why not name your top 5 favorite 26 episode (or less) animes.

I'll start it of with, in no particular order :

Elfen Lied (13 episodes)
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Darker than Black
Samurai Champloo

Haven't seen Elfen Lied or Darker Than Black. Cowboy Bebop to me is not that great. I like it, but not worth buying.
1. Black Cat (24) Would be in my top five regardless of length restriction.
2. Trigun
3. Samurai Champloo
4. S-Cry-Ed
Edit: 5. Gurren Lagaan (26 or 27) Is it ok if I use it if it's one over?
Samurai 7 close number 6 with Dot Hack Sign.

Cowboy Bebop is a favorite of mine, but I've watched them so much that they've lost "re-watch-ability" unfortunately.

Elfen Lied is a pretty amazing, action drama that is likely to make you cry if your an emotional person or get emotional easily. And S-Cry-Ed is definitely a in my tops, probably tying with Samurai Champloo

I actually had to switch out Samurai 7 with S-Cry-Ed cause it popped into my head after posting. Like I said, I have nothing against Cowboy Bebop. It's just not one of my favs. It is a solid show though. Had to reedit again. Should have moved S-Cry-Ed up over Gurren. Fixed it.

Outlaw Star, 26 episodes
Cowboy Bebop, 26 episodes+ a movie
Trigun, 26 episodes with a movie in japan
Big O, 26 episodes

Tatakau Shisho - The Book of Bantorra had 27.
Ghost in the Shell had many, many more than 26.
Just about any successful shounen anime out there will have concluded with at least 50 episodes.
The list goes on.

However, I will concede that many do have 26, but I'm pretty sure that it really just has to do with either the season length in Japan or just the standard amount of episodes ordered.

Ghost in the Shell had 52 episodes, 3 movies, and a third season is rumored. Haven't seen the other one you listed. But, yeah, I think you're right. 26 is usually the season length in Japan. So if they do only one season, thinking their's no chance the show will be renewed for another, they will try to get the story across in one season.

Erm, I actually think that 13 is actually the season length. I remember reading something about how The Big O's second season wasn't as good as the first. However, since that series only had 26 episodes, that must mean that each season had 13.

I think it might vary from show to show. Ghost In The Shell is two seasons, and each season is 26 episodes. Then you have DBZ. I think every season is a different number.

Entirely possible. I'll have to remember to ask my cousin in Japan next time I see her.

You have a cousin in Japan? That's awesome! Sorry, my love for Japan knows no bounds. Let me know when you do. It'd be interesting to know.

I did not know that. I hope I didn't offend you. I'm an all white guy who, ever since watching DBZ when I was 11, has really been interested anime and Japanese video games.
