The Merovingian, also known as the Frenchman, and called Merv by Trinity, is a fictional character in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, portrayed by Lambert Wilson in both films. He also plays a prominent role in The Matrix Online role-playing game.

He is a powerful and dangerous program with the personality of an elitist, bourgeois-mannered French gourmet and power broker who enjoys fine pleasantries and scintillating conversations. He employs several exiled programs as henchmen, including the Twins; he also imprisons the Keymaker and controls the Trainman.

:In The Matrix Reloaded, the Oracle instructs Neo to reach the Source of the Matrix by finding the Keymaker, a prisoner in the home of the Merovingian. Neo, Morpheus (The Matrix) and Trinity visit the Merovingian and ask for the Keymaker's release; the Merovingian refuses, but his wife Persephone, tired of his attitude, betrays him and leads the trio to the Keymaker, allowing one of the Merovingian's henchmen to escape and notify him of it. The Merovingian soon appears; while Morpheus, Trinity, and the Keymaker escape, Neo fights the Merovingian's henchmen, then pursues the Merovingian himself, who manipulates a door to escape.
